Unless I have missed it, it would seem to me that we have failed as a group to adequately congratulate Steve on his new C&C 35. I do not know much, but I know a C&C is a nicer boat that I will ever own or even get a ride on.
Hey Steve, how about some pictures?

Thanks for the kind thoughts, Frank. I know some of you will eventually have bigger, nicer boats, but the C&C 35 is a very nice boat and it's just right for me at this time. Mine is generally in good shape inside and out, but it seriously needs a bottom job. The P.O. apparently just painted over the old bottom paint with very little sanding or prep from year to year. I'm heading out there in a couple of days to have the boat hauled, and plan to strip all the paint off the lead keel with paint strippers, and then will sand as much off the bottom as possible in a few days. That won't get the bottom in top racing condition, but it'll be plenty good for cruising, and I doubt that I'll race the boat much, if at all. I'm not sure, but think the PHRF rating for the C&C 35 Landfall on the Chesapeake is about 174, or thereabouts, which isn't bad for a cruising boat without a folding prop, so it ought to have a nice turn of speed and very good pointing ability. When we had the sea trials, she moved really well considering the condition of her bottom. The racing version of the C&C 35, which has the same hull, but is much lighter and is rated with a folding prop, rates down in the 120's, which, by my standards, is very fast.

After the hard work is done, in a week or so, you're all welcome to sail with me whenever you're in the area. I already have a chartbook and cruising guide for the bay, and there is an amazing variety of interesting places to go on the bay.

I gave my digital camera to my graphic arts student son, and have been mulling over whether to invest in another one. I can see that I'm going to have to take photos from time to time, so I'll go out and buy one today and post some photos soon.

Yesterday I showed my beloved Captiva Wind to a prospective buyer and believe she is sold. Like most boats her age, she needs some work, but the prospective new owners are a nice young couple who I took out on my boat a couple of years ago, and who subsequently bought a C22. They know how to do the necessary repairs, and I gave them a deal they couldn't refuse. (One thing they won't have to do is a bottom job. With a light sanding and a fresh coat of bottom paint, she'll be ready to race!) They said they lurk on this forum periodically, so I know you'll be hearing from them after the deal is closed, if not sooner.

Congratulations Steve

There's a C&C 3/4 ton available here Frank -- its listed at about 17.9 but I bet you could get it out the door for about 13. The owner (commodores wife at edgewater) was pretty meticulous, so she's in fairly decent condiditon...

Congratulations Steve. I'm glad you found a boat that will take you where you want to go. Are you still in Ohio, or have you relocated permanently?

Congrats Steve. I sent you an e-m about it a few days ago but obviously it wasn't delivered (sending them direct from profiles doesn't seem to work too well).
I race against a C&C35-3 occasionally and she rates 117!
Does this mean you won't be racing at the Nationals?

Thanks Dave and Duane and Ben and Derek!

Ben: With my son living independently, I don't need the big house anymore, so it will be on the market sometime in the next year. I haven't decided whether I'll buy a smaller house in Dayton, or somewhere else, or whether I'll live on the boat for awhile. I'll probably just let that decision evolve. I visited Norfolk a couple of years ago, and thought that might be a nice place to live.

Derek: I checked my email, and haven't received the email you sent. Sometimes I get emails that are sent to me from the forum, but I didn't get yours for some reason.

I won't be racing at the nationals, but would have enjoyed racing against you and your crack crew. You guys are going to have a great time at the nationals this year. If you ever get to the Chesapeake area, let me know, and we'll find someone to race against. The main reason why I don't plan to race her is because I won't know anyone out there to crew for me, and think she's really too much boat for me to try to race singlehanded, rounding the marks and re-trimming the sails and all, but if I had able crew....hmmmmm

Thanks Steve! If I ever get to the Chesapeake I'll take you up on the offer - I'd love to help race your C&C.
We'll sure miss you at the Nationals.

Steve,

Congratulations on your new boat!! Sounds like a sweet ride.

I'm in the process of selling my 250 WK as part of a deal for a new C-34 (due in late June, details to follow). I've appreciated all your input & advice (along with everyone elses') over the past year.

I apologize for my lack of knowledge, but where in the Chesapeake do you sail? I'm at the upper end out of Bodkin Creek.

Jeff, the boat is at Flag Harbor Yacht Haven, a few miles south of Prince Frederick, MD., on the western shore of the Bay. It's in about the middle of the Bay, which will make the whole Bay fairly accessible.

If you want to get in some sailing while you're waiting for your new boat to arrive, give me a shout. I check my email regularly.

Congratulations Steve.....174 seems like a number where you could do some damage if you ever decide to race. A quick Google yields numbers in the 150's in other locales.

I'm in Rock Hall, East shore abeam Baltimore....give me a shout if you see me out there....

Oscar,

A belated WELCOME BACK!! I believe you are due east of me. Who'd a thought all of us were only a few miles apart?

Maybe we can get together some time. The bay isn't that big.

I’ll wave at you, Oscar, but if you’re pushing that one, big wave at the time, like in the photo, I probably won’t be able to catch you. That’s a great boat!

I think Oscar might be right Steve - We don't have a 35-Landfall (we have a 38 Landfall in the 150's) on the list in Cleveland, but the other versions of the C&C 35 come in around 117 to 126. You might have a good advantage there..

Congrats Steve on the new boat. I noticed you name was not on the BLSA renewed member list and wondered what was going on. The Chesapeake is a great place to sail. My mom is in Hampton, VA (across a creek the size of Brookville Lake from Langly AFB) and every time we visit there always seems to be plenty of wind. Stop by and say hi if you get to Hanna Creek.

Thanks Ray. Likewise, if you're visiting your Mom and want to get in a sail, let me know. it'll be a good opportunity to catch up with the happenings at Brookville.

Try sending it through your regular email program.

I'm at the boat now, but they have a work backlog, and might not be able to hoist my boat out for a week, so I can do a bottom job on it. I might be "forced" to defer that nasty, hard work for a week, and get my son out here and go sailing. Darn!

Here are the photos of the new boat.

Many old layers of bottom paint made the keel very rough, so, last week I stripped the keel and filled some minor depressions on it, hand-sanded the bottom, keel and rudder, and put on two coats of ablative bottom paint. She's not as race-ready as my old C25, but she'll do nicely. The first time I raised the main and working jib (before I did the bottom job), she accelerated to about 7 1/3 kts, and the wind wasn't all that strong. That boat already knows how to make my heart leap!

Nice looking boat Steve. What's she draw? We've been looking for bigger (28'-32') & saw a couple C&C's, but the draft on all was well over 5' - almost 6' which is a little deep for the gunkholing we like to do.
