As Minnesota graciously & consistently provides us with long winters my wife, two sons & I are thinking of sailing in the Florida Keys in early March 2006. I've been in touch with one charter company (Keys Cruisers) but am lobbing this to the Forum as some of you are no doubt experienced in those waters. Any outfits you'd recommend, or recommend against? Any tales lovely or horrific to lend spice to this decision? Thanks --
I can't answer the questions you asked, but early March is a perfect time for a Florida cruise. Florida weather is usually wonderful that time of the year! Enjoy your trip!
Try contacting Frank Gloss (on this Forum) - he has trailered his own boat down that way at least a couple of times for vacation cruises and may know something about chartering in the keys.
the only charter I have been involved with in the Keys is a week long trawler charter from Treasure Harbor Marine in Islamorada. They do have some sailboats. Look them up on the net. I believe that there is a sailing school in Marathon that also charters. I would do an internet search, you can probably find more. In any event, shoal draft keel in the keys is a big plus.
Did ten days in Keys in March....it was gorgeous. Don't know of charter outfits, but there's a potload of them in Miami and that's a great place to start (I base out of Fort Lauderdale in winter.) Having said that, keep your itinerary realistic.....60 miles is a lot in one day.... Northern Keys provide lots to do....Seaquarium on Biscayne Key.....Elliott Key/Boca Chica....Pennekamp State Park with most of it underwater for the best snorkeling is a MUST....you could go further down to Islamorada......
Hi Oscar, Good to hear from you In my humble opinion the middle and upper keys are the best areas of the Keys to cruise. With that said, the trip to dry Tortugas, and Loggerhead Key was fantastic, the problem was going to Key West first
