So what does the gas-fill do for binoculars?

Insures that there's an inert, moisture-free environment inside the cases.

'dry' gas prevents moisture from fogging internal optics - waterproof, 7x50, gas filled are the BASIC criteria IMHO -

compass only if you take range bearings for triangulated position while coastal cruising . . . or just like toys

stabilized only if you have lot's of bucks and like super toys (remember that complex systems are inherently less reliable)
