Last week we visited several ramps around the Key Largo Florida area. The best we found was at John Penekamp State Park, fees are reasonable and has pumpout, fuel, water and showers with rental of either a mooring buoy or slip. Harry Harris Park, further south/west, has two ramps, but has a real problem with seaweed, it covered the ramps with at least 4" of weed, a couple of feet thick near the edges of the ramps. Trucks were slipping quite a bit. 4X4 trucks had no problem. Mangrove Marina has a nice ramp but seems is only suitable for shallow drafts. They said the C250WB would be ok. They do have lift out ability. Very nicely kept location. Locally we have a couple of really good ramps. Black Point Marina has a terrific setup, tons of parking, I think they have 7 ramps and very well organized. Fuel is available behind the resturant. We heard from a local user about Homestead Bayfront marina, have not seen it yet, but he described it as even better than Black Point. We can purchase a $120 annual pass that is supposed to be good to use at all of the miami dade county ramps. A very good deal.
Anyone know of other ramps that are suitable in the palm beach, broward county area?
ps. I checked with Wal-Mart and they still have the rechargable air pump for emptying the water ballast as suggested in this forum. That will ease the load on recovery to the trailer considerably.
Fourteen of us from the Trailer Sailor BBS used the Homestead Bayfront park in '02. It was very nice. But as you mentioned the algae on the ramp means that you must keep your drive wheels dry. There were some reports that the ramp looses one vehicle a week. I personally slid down it on my feet as I tried to release the winch strap from the bow eye. Best bet may be to have a tow line to another vehicle just in case. Or stand by with some wheel chocks.
When we visited the Black Point Marina, the ramps were in Awesome condition (March 2005). The entire marina has been rebuilt since Andrew cleaned out the place but that was in 1992 (last century). We took the time to introduce ourselves to the park staff and they were extremely helpful. I was really impressed with the whole place.
