Ever heard of this brand? Apparently CDirect hasn't, since they don't list it, but it's in my 1983 C25. It does'nt pull flush water in anymore, although you can pour water in the bowl and flush the waste that way. Drybowl function works OK. Anyone know where I can secure repair parts or should I replace the whole deal for about $150 for a Jabsco from WM?
I inherited a W-C WC from PO. It had similar problems to yours. The leather in the valve dries out over time and becomes brittle. Rather than fool around with it, I replaced the whole thing. A Jabsco head with a new seat from West Marine set me back about $110 (on sale) four years ago. Simple to install. Works fine. Every so often (ie. when I remember, I pour a vial of head lubricant into the system to keep the valve nice and supple.
I had this exact problem with this brand and kept putting off fixing it. When I finally was ready to bite the bullet and probably buy a new head, I one day set to work. Pulled the little white hose on the top of the pump. Put my hand over it while pumping plunger and VOILA. All it needed was a prime. Good luck.
Wilcox-Crittendon is one of the oldest manufacturers of marine accessories in the US. Their heads were very p[opular as new installs back in the 70's and 80's. They were no better than any other head, there have been extensive reports in Practical Sailor, Cruising World, etc on heads, and both W-C and Jabsco got dinged for having small and delicate gaskets, flaps, etc. But as to getting spare parts, I doubt that will be a problem. Try Defender Industries, I know they used to carry kits for them, however the cost of the kit may warrant buying a new head---???Good luck, Ron Orion srsk SW FL
Somehow I don't think this is what you meant----(head shots of larry wilcox 'CHIPs' and Colonel Crittendon 'Hogan's Heros')but I found it personally amusing.
About 4 years ago we picked up a Jabsco from "The" Boat US for about one boat unit. It replaced the Par brand that was originaly in there. I just did a froogle search on Wilcox-Crittendon and found a repair kit at Sailnet
I had the WC Skipper for the 15yrs I owned my Rafiki 37 and it was in the boat 10yrs before that with few problems. In the cruising community it was known as an excellent head. If you price it you may be surprised at how expensive it is to purchase.I believe they are close to $1000.Parts are available but can be pricey. We used vegetable oil to keep leather parts lubricated or you can buy more expensive lubicant for this purpose at West Marine.Using head in salt water can cause other problems such as salt caking inside hoses. The solution for this is diluted muretic Acid poured into bowl every few months to dissolve salt deposits. In any case, don't throw away the WC before you resolve your problem with it as it is a great product.
There is a HUGE difference between the W-C top of the line Skipper and the Compact that was the standard install on new boats in the seventies, et al. Practical sailor did an extensive study of the head issue back a ways, but I dont have the back issues to review, any more. If the "skipper" is up to a grand today, it wouldnt surprise me, they were worth plenty back then. I once owned a 38 foot Maine-built cruiser which had a head like a palace (PO was 6'4") and it had the memorable double-piston W-C with a lever about four feet long, that sucker pumped like a fire hose, Fair winds, ron srsk Orion SW FL
I changed to a porta potty and am selling mine. I think it's the same one you have. It worked fine when I removed it a week or so ago. I just decided I didn't want to deal with the holding tank thing.
It's in the swap forum.
I had put a tank in and then decided to forfiet the whole thing. That's for sale too. It was never "actually" used, so it's pretty much new. Just flushed with water.
