I have an opportunity to purchase a 85 Catalina Fin keel which is a great boat for the price.($6500). I was getting excited looking her over when the seller informed me that I had to have a marina step the mast as it is a tall rig. is this true? if so, any ideas on ways around this??

No it is not true, Any three healthy men can do it and four old farts can get it done as well. It is a piece of cake. Being organized is far harder than the lifting.

Two people can do it using the various methods shown in the tech tips. And I've even done it all by myself a couple of times.

I have also done it myself. The key is to use an A-frame. I also use a "mast up" which I saved from my Catalina 22. Check with Catalina Direct and see if they are selling them for the 25. Great piece of gear. Do a search of this topic and you will find lots of old posts to help guide you.

The most important thing to keep in mind about the tall rig is that when lying flat, with the base pinned into the tabernackle, the balance point will be aft of the transom by about 18". If you use a mast crutch that is inboard of the transom, the mast will be overbalanced and when you pull the pin, the masthead will want to drop, and the mast base will want to rise - clobbering you in the face if you are bending over it while pulling the pin out. Tall rig mast raising should NOT be attempted with the boat in the water unless you can back the boat into a slip and have a dock behind and to each side for helpers to stand on. If you have access to a 12' stepladder, they make a good mast support to place behind the boat to support a Tall Rig mast untill you can get the tabernackle pin installed (or removed if dropping the mast for trailering).

Larry makes a good point. I never let the mast go when pinning it. I also always step/unstep with the boat on the trailer, and on level ground.

I made an "A"frame and a Mast crutch that sits at the end of the cockpit. This spring we ( the Boss and I)were able to raise the mast by ourselves.
