My boom is 11'1" long; compared to bjoyce's boom (in the slip next to me) his is 10'-5" long. Now, besides the fact I'm proud to be longer than Barry, can anyone explain why the difference, and is there a 'standard' length for the boom? Will length affect performance? (OK, I left an opening there, but you know what I mean!).
The foot of the main should be nine feet seven inches. It sounds like somewhere along the way you got a replacement boom. Maybe one from a Catalina 27???? Like Clam said - won't make a difference, except for the sheeting angle.
Even if you were to get a bigger sail, the roach would have to be about the same due to the backstay. Your performance would be minimally enhanced.
I have a tall rig and the boom on my boat is also just over 11' long. The longer length puts the main sheet closer to the traveller. Other than that, I can see no advantage with the standard sail.
