After purchasing a new motor, I've developed a water issue that didn't exist with my old motor. When I use reverse to back out of my slip, I get water up through the swing keel cable hose. It's not a fountain or anything just enough to get the cushion wet. My new motor is an 8hp high thrust Yamaha. The old one was a 9.9 Evinrude Sailmaster. Is this a thrust issue? Has any other swinger skippers experienced water up the keel cable hose in reverse? Solutions? I've thought about pluggin the top of the hose with a sponge or the like. This would work until I crank the keel up and then it will pop out. This certainly isn't a major problem but I'm perplexed why it's happening with the new motor. Thanks in advance for any advice.
This topic has come up before, and we never did figure out the physics involved. It seems to be even worse if you are lowering/raising the keel at the same time you're backing up (I found that out the first time I launched ... what an eye-opener ).
As you already surmised, sticking a sponge in the cable tube seems to be the easiest cure. I bought a PVC pipe cap that I plan to carve up and put on top, but I haven't gotten around to it yet ... the water just isn't a big enough problem to get me motivated to fix it.
The easiest fix that I used was a duck tape job over the top of the tube which was later replaced by a sink rubber stopper with a slit cut in it for the cable. The duck tape temp lasted til the stopper was located. Probably would have lasted a season but the stopper looked better.
I have no idea what size the stopper was and have since switched to the wing retrofit keel so the tube is no longer there to measure its diameter on your behalf. Sorry
I seem to remember from the last haulout that the hose piece was a wirewound 1 and 1/2", same as for head discharge throughhulls. But my memory is worse every year. Better measure, ron srsk Orion SW FL
Hey Swinger Skippers, Thanks a bunch. The rubber sink stopper has possibilities as does the PVC cap. You're absolutely right. It's not enough water to pitch a fit over however, I just spent some boat units to re-upholster the interior. I did have them use vinyl around the keel cable cut out, but who wants moisture on new cushions? So, I'll try one of (or both) of your suggestions. At least now when it happens I won't feel like the lone ranger..er..uh...skipper. What a great place to exchange problems and solutions! Thanks!
