Great forum...one of the reasons I went with a 250 is because this is such a great resource.....
I have just purchased 250 WK # 631 (2001)- "Caspian" - and I am in the process of figuring out where everything is and how to handle her.
I have been following the threads on reefing avidly as it became very apparent the blustery condition of SF Bay where I sail - that reefing was a necessity and the current single line system is not up to it. I have a double line system temporarily in place base on Arlyn's system (someone should give that guy a medal...what a great bunch of info..) for the first reef but I need to add hardware to the boom and/or coach roof to get the second reef system working. In order to do this, I will need to drill and screw stuff to the boom and/or coach and, being a complete newby at metal/fiber/plastic boat work, I was wondering whether there was a primer somewhere to show me how to do this without screwing it up too badly
2nd question was wrt V locker and the thru-hulls for the sounder and speed gizmo (technical term) . Caspian is definitely trimmed by the stern and experiences strong weather helm, as she has wheel steering, a Honda 8 long outboard and yours truly perched on the stern. I wanted to take the advice discussed here and add some ballast to the forward v-berth locker to try and correct that. Unfortunately - this is right where the transponder for the through hulls are and I am somewhat reluctant to drop 100lbs of sand or whatever on top of them. If I stow the sand further forward, I fear it will slide back into them and I am a little worried by the potential consequences of dislodging a thru hull...(Dad...why is there 2 feet of water in the cabin...?). I suspect this is only an issue with the WK as the WB will have the ballast tank somewhere between but I could be wrong. Sooo..anyone have any sage advise as to how to protect the through hulls while adding ballast (or spare anchors etc )...?
I epoxied a couple of pieces of 2 X 4's in front of the Transducers to protect them and dropped in two 50 lb bags of Marble Chips wrapped in Saran Wrap. I may add another. Does anyone have suggestions for how many? I have a C250 WK with a Yamaha 9.9 on the Stern.
How much weight? Start with your 100 lbs & see how she handles. If you think you need a little more add another 50 lbs & see how she handles. You'll get dialed in to the right weight in a couple weekends.
Roger's idea with the 2x works or you could make a box to cover them. My transducers are mounted to the aft of the water tanks so I don't have that problem. I have added an additonal 12 gal. water tank (106 lbs) and will be adding 2 golf cart batteries soon for additional weight. All that doesn't leave a lot of room in the under v-berth storage area, but we sleep in the aft berth and use the v-berth for our primary storage area so no great loss.
