In protest of Senator Rick Santorum's bill, asking that National Weather Service not be permitted to provide us with life saving information for free, but instead to see us buy it from a commercial service. This service is essential in heavy weather states and must be saved.. Please help us keep the National Weather Services radar and service online, and saving lives.

Im wondering where the National Weather Service's Budget comes from. I.E. Aren't we already paying Taxes to pay for it.

I really question the esteemed senators' analysis & logic. Another fine example of the taxpayer's money being wasted on the salary of a "deficient".

Maybe his (Senator Rick Santorum's )next bill will be to privatize the Navy, why not?
Surely private companies could do a more cost effective job.

Cheaper ships, union labor for sure, and of course, private nuclear subs would be a pretty good investment.

And the private navy could purchase their weather data from the private weather services.
Look to see if bill gates is buying stock in weather data companies.

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today introduced the National Weather Services Duties Act of 2005 to clarify the duties and responsibilities of the National Weather Service (NWS) within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“With the support of my colleagues, we can pass this legislation to modernize the description of the National Weather Service’s roles within the national weather enterprise, so that it reflects today’s reality in which the National Weather Service and the commercial weather industry both play important parts in providing weather products and services to the nation,” said Senator Santorum.

Fourteen years ago the NWS took the extra step of carefully delineating the respective roles of the NWS and the commercial weather industry, in addition to pledging its intention not to provide products or services that were or could be provided by the commercial weather industry.

However, the parent agency of the NWS, NOAA, repealed the 1991 non-competition and non-duplication policy in December 2004. Its new policy only promises to “give due consideration” to the abilities of private sector entities. The new policy has enabled NWS and NOAA to expand into areas that are already well served by the commercial weather industry.

“This decision by NOAA to repeal the non-competition and non-duplication policy detracts from NWS’s core missions of maintaining a modern and effective meteorological infrastructure, collecting comprehensive observational data, and issuing warnings and forecasts of severe weather that imperil life and property,” said Senator Santorum.

Senator Santorum’s bill restores the NWS non-competition policy. However, the legislation leaves NWS with complete and unfettered freedom to carry out its critical role of preparing and issuing severe weather warnings and forecasts designed for the protection of life and property of the general public.

How is the public "better served" by having to pay for basic weather information? Oh I forgot, we're moving into an "ownership society".

Instead of signing a petition contact your state Senator's office directly and tell them what you think. They will listen.

The truly amazing thing here is how cheaply you can buy a US Senator and have him betray his constituents. Apparently only $2,000 from the CEO of Accuweather does it.

The commercial weather services already distribute weather data to clients using public information. for example sattelite, balloon, buoy, and ground station data is all collected by NOAA. If the Senator truly wants the duties of each entity separate, let the commercial weather industry collect its own data.
Let them launch their own sattelites.

All the data collected by NOAA already belongs to us, after all we pay for it. Having a private pilots license I have had some training in understanding weather data. As sailors we develop a healthy respect for what the weather might be doing and can inteligently use data provided by NOAA. So why, having already paid for the information should we have to pay again to use it.

OK I'm done............. send the pettion and call your representatives. call the president if you want.
