Anyone have experience with the larger electric outboards on a C25? Examples are Ray Outbds and Outboard-Electric companies' 4.5 hp units(equiv. to approx 7 hp 2 stroke)? These operate on 48V batteries drawing about 80 amps peak, or 30 amps at 1/2 power. Overnight 110v or 5 day large solar chargers.

Practical Sailor did a piece on this last month. They seemed impressed with a couple of models, even mentioned a 30 foot sail boat using one. I would wonder if the added weight of the batteries would be offset by the lessor weight of the motor and the lack of a fuel tank.

As I recall, a couple of people over there have pulled togehter sort of a FAQ on the topic. A couple of really short answers are:
Obviously motor size (HP) depends on the worst case conditions you'll ever need to motor through. There's quite a difference between getting in an out of a boat slip on a quiet lake, vs. running an ocean inlet against the tide in rough weather.
Battery bank size (weight) depends on how far you need to motor between charges.
We use an electric motor exclusivly on our boat. When we purchased the boat we removed and stored the British Seagull motor and installed a Motor Guide transom mount 110# thrust salt water trolling motor. It is a 36 volt motor which runs on three deep cycle bateries from Sam's Club. The batteries are mounted under the rear berth. The boat trims out well with two people in the cockpit and the batteries underneath.
We sail on a lake just outside of Jackson Mississippi. No currents, no comercial traffic, no tides. Our only need for speed is to outrun the occasional thunderstorm.
The motor attaches to the standard motor mount with clamps and has a plug that goes into the deck for power. Due to the configuration of the motor we are able to spin the boat about its keel with no forward movement at all. It makes docking in tight places easy.
When you compute the battery capacity and motor load (running at the highest setting) we have about 3 hours of run time at full power. To date we have not run the motor on any single occasion more than about thirty minutes.
Its top speed is definatley slower than with a standard outboard, but we only have about 75 yards to open water. It can stop the boat with little effort compared to the typical outboard motor. I would not hesitate to give someone a tow with it either.
Bottom line: We love it, have never felt unsafe using it, it has never failed to start, it has never stalled, it has never slipped out of gear, and we never smell gas and oil on our trips (at least not from our motor), and it is extremely quiet, but we would never rely on it outside of an inland lake.
