After putting it off for years I bought a new rudder last month from Catalina Direct. The old ruddder was a constant battle in all winds and sail plans. My old rudder finally started to give way so I dug deep and bought a new one.

Now here is the problem.

I contacted the local Catalina dealer and asked if he had experience putting one of these new rudders on. He told me that he used a local guy and gave me his number.

The new and the old rudder were picked up and a few days later dropped off at my boat. Today I went down to put the rudder on and it didn't fit.

At this point it looks as it the old pintals have been mounted to close to the rudder. But it also looks as if the old gudgeons may be too small.

So the question is, as I await the return of my contractor. Before I re-drill and re-mount the rudder hardware etc.

can I use the old hardware on a new rudder? or are there new parts that go with a new rudder ?

CD should be able to answer that. My guess is that the new rudder would need its own new hardware, as there are different forces on the balance rudder. You refer to the 'old pintals' and the 'old gudgeons'...didn't new hardware come with the rudder?

When ordering a new balanced rudder from CD it's important to let them know the year of your vessel, the hull number and to have them install the new pintles on the rudder.

Then it will slide right into the existing gudgeons without difficulty.

Adam,

3 years ago, July 4th, my orginal rudder snapped in half while enjoying high winds and a significant heel. What a rush! Needless to say, I purchased a new rudder and installed the old pintels on the new rudder at home using the broken orginal rudder as my template (using the oversized hole and epoxy method).

When I arrived at the boat lying in her slip, I found the pintels did not match the mounts on the boat. I ended up having to remove the pintels from the new rudder and slid them into the mounts. I then held up the new rudder to the pintels (with some help) and marked the new mounting locations.

After repairing the old holes and drilling new ones, the rudder slid in without any problems. So I guess you can use the old hardware, it just takes a little extra thought!

Hi Adam, I used the hardware from my original rudder when I received my new balanced rudder. This was per the instructions from Catalina Direct. One thing I seem to remember is that the balanced rudder was just a bit wider than the original, so I took a rubber mallet and hammered (not very hard) on the hard to fit on the new rudder. I haven't had any problems with it since the installation.

Good luck.
