Okay... so what's balanced about this?

Apparently my gudgeons are small.... sorry is this getting to personal?

My new rudder is finally on... they ground down the leading edge of the rudder at the waterline and loosened the pintals and presto there it is... or so I am am told. The shop that did the work put the rudder on the boat but after putting the tiller on upside down, the attempt to put it right side up resulted in the bolt slipping free... I'm not making this up... well anyway the bolt has left the dock even though the boat still hasn't... SO

Here is the question... what size bolt do I need. I'm not at the boat and the on-line manual is vague.

Please help me... haul out is fast approaching!

Adam

3/8 by 3 inches. hex or round head. Don't like your guys way of doing rhings. Grinding down the leadinmg edge of the rudder unless done in the most superficial way (like sanding it) has seriously weakened it at a point where it is none too strong. They probably did not overbore and epoxy the bolts for the pintles either. Dave

Dave's concern about grinding the leading edge of your rudder is valid. How much material was removed (and why)? There are foil shape, water intrusion and basic strength issues to consider.

I doubt if Catalina would design a rudder for your boat that required grinding down the leading edge to fit. If the shop did it without asking, I would seriously consider them buying me a new rudder and starting from scratch by calling Catalina and finding out why this would even be considered. It could be that the new style gudgeons would have been required not grinding the rudder. I would also doubt that you now have what you paid for, a BLANCED RUDDER.
