My Brother and I have purchased a 25' Catalina and the owner through in an extra engine a Yamaha 9.9. The engine that we are having repaired is a 1986 Yamaha 9.9. It had the plug come out and lost its oil. The mechanic told the former owner that it needed about $800 of work to replace the lower unit on the engine. Does anyone know if this is worth it? What is a good price for a new Yamaha 9.9? Anyone selling? You guys have been great so far with your suggestions, encouragement and warnings. Thanks. We live on Long Island the boat is in the Chesapeake.
I have an '87 Yamaha 9.9 electric start. It has been a fantastic engine. I did need to replace the oil pump and the water pump. However, $800.00 for a lower unit seems high. Check around for used ones. It is not hard to swap one out.
$800 is nothing, I just spent $600 on a tune up, impeller, and oil change on my Honda outboard. That motor would cost nearly $3000 new (considering taxes and such). If it is an extra long shaft, high thrust, spend the $. Or you could sell it to me.
