I've read about these and drooled over the performance statistics, but never saw one up close until this weekend. We were out in about 10 knots of wind making pretty good headway on a close/beam reach when this oddly shaped vessel appeared behind us. With its amas and akas it looked to me like something approximating a Klingon space ship right out of StarTrek. Within a few minutes it caught up with me and passed me like I was standing still. It was awsome to watch. It HAD to travelling at speeds faster than the wind. Is that possible? Do these things make their own wind? And before you ask, it's outboard motor was tilted up out of the water.

Yes, many fast multi-hulls "make their own wind". Boat speed is added vector-wise to true wind speed and direction for total apparent wind on sails. And so fast sailboats (or sailboards, or wind carts, or ice boats, etc.) can build upon their accumulated speed, much like a turbocharger gaining power and RPM from the boost it's already producing.
And yes, if my sailing toy budget were a whole lot fatter, I'd have one of the largest trailerable trimarans Corsair made.

The faster a boat goes to windward, the higher the apparent windspeed, and the more drive the sails can generate, even though the actual windspeed hasn't increased at all. The additional drive makes an easily-driven hull go even faster, which generates even more apparent wind. That's why an ice boat can get up to 70 mph in winds nowhere near that strong.
That probably is also the reason that a displacement monohull is faster on a beam reach while a sailboard is theoretically fastest on a 45deg close-haul. I read somewhere once that they can get to 1.5 times the wind speed.
If I could trade up (or down) I'd want to go with a sailboat that can plane off the wind. Wow, what fun that would be.
Tuesday I was sailing in strong wids and big, steep waves (like 6 to 7 feet). It was a swell. It was a blast to sail on a close reach parallel to the swell, then "drop in" off the crest and try to stay sailing across the face as long as possible. This generated boat speeds in the high 7s. I only wish Indiscipline could plane, I could have surfed those swells for miles.
Hoping for a repeat this weekend, the swells were still there (not as steep), as was the wind, but with a nasty 3 foot cross swell and lots of chop kept killing boat speed.

We have three of those trimarans on our little reservoir; an F24, F27 and an F28. I talked to the guy on the F28 and he said he's had him boat up to 18 knots. That sure sounds fast to me!
There's an F24 at Brookville Lake, and it's fast, but it apparently isn't easy to race. As I recall, one of the problems is that you have to furl the jib every time you tack on the windward leg. I don't remember anyone ever explaining why.
My wife and I raced Hobie 16's here on the West Coast for many years in the 70' and 80's. The 16's top speed is somewhere in the range of 27 to 29 miles per hour. I have been at this point of total terror many times in the couse of a race, usually on the reaching leg which for Hobie races is between A and B marks. Double trapped, foam and spray flying, just on the edge of sudden pitch pole, God I miss those races!!!! San Francisco Bay is great for strong steady wind and Monterey Bay for surfing the big waves coming in from Hawaii.
My brother has an F24 moored on Tomales Bay north of San Francisco. I have only had the opportunity to sail on it once and the wind was light that day. It moved fairly well, but I would love to get on it in a blow. Not much of a cabin, but for overnighting for a couple it can be done. What surprised me the most was it has a full out marine toilet under the V berth. The price for these little beauties is somewhere near Star Trec levels.
We have an F27 in our Club. One of the cruiser fleet went out on it and got hooked - his Beneteau 321 is now for sale as he wants a tri! Derek P.S. The owner of the F27 says that it is no problem to tack.
There was an F-31 at Folsom Lake a couple of years ago (I haven't seen it lately though). Impressive performance, but way more money than I could possibly justify for what amounts to a fancy day sailer. My house cost less (in 1989) than the MSRP on a new F-31. I heard the F-31 is priced at around $150K . For that many BU's I think you could almost get into a Catalina 350 or Catalina 36 Mk. II?
