I'm relatively new to the forum's here. I've been reading for about a year now, but just signed on today. With all of the great advice I've seen posted I figured I'd ask the burning boating question that's been on my mind lately!
I am in the market to possibly replace an aging RF on my 1989 Catalina 25. The current model is made by Plastimo and has given us trouble every time we try to use it. This past weekend the forestay broke at the top of the extrusion just above the swivel (which is looking pretty rough).
I have been looking at "the big four": Harken, Furlex, ProFurl, and Schaefer. Harken seems the most attractive, pricewise, to me but I am not sure whether to opt for the MkIII 00AL which is rated for Coastal Cruisers from 20' - 26' or the MkIII 0 which is rated for boats from 22' - 28'.
My question for the group is, if I decide to go with Harken, would it be better to go with the 00AL and be pushing the top end of the range for that model, or spend the extra $400 and get the MkIII 0 in which the Catalina 25 would fit nicely in the center of that furler's recommended range.
We sail on the South River, just south of Annapolis and into the Chesapeake Bay with a 130% jib.
Print out pictures from the Harken site, (so you can recognize them), take them to your docks and find the two units. Touch them, stare at them, listen to them; one of them is calling you! I used the MarkIII 0 on my other 25ft'r and loved it. It has an enclosed drum which I liked. I am cheesy and superficial enough that I liked the big red Harken logo on the silver drum.
