Hello everyone! I have an interest in adding an additional traveler track forward in the cockpit giving me the option, one for single-handling and the other for entertaining guests. My questions would be; If the traveler was as wide as the cockpit floor, flush with the seat and as far forward as posible would these parameters allow the travelar to funtion well. The goal is to make the additional traveler as invasive as possible.

If you really want the traveler to be as "invasive as possible," how about mounting it right in the center of the cockpit like on a J-24.

However, I think what you really mean is "UNOBTRUSIVE."

Vasilli, I think that word does not mean what you think it means.

The closer to the goose neck the shorter the traveler needs to be. What you describe would probably be a slight improvement on the transom mounted horse. I am more and more interested in developing a bridgedeck to span the seats. O'Days have them and they are the perfect place for the "slow to move" people to sit and make travelers easier to mount.

Years ago I sailed often with a pal who owned a Dufour 27 foot boat. The traveler was between the cockpit seats right at the companionway entrance. It did not continue over the seats to the coamings. It was set below seat level slightly. People could still sit either side on the cockpit seats. It worked pretty well, I think had 4:1 purchase and , of course, mid-boom sheet attachment (more or less). However, that boat was designed to heve a rather short boom, relatively small mainsail, relying on the jib for much of its drive. Since the traveler car was always on one side or the other (no real adjustment) it was not as hard to get in and out of the companionway as you might think, and was a handy thing to grab ahold of when exiting on deck. All in all, not a terrible rig, but certainly not for a racer. Fair winds, ron Orion srsk #2343 SW FL

On a related note, is there a somewhat less drastic modification to give the existing traveller more "travel"? Because of its position at the end of the boom and because of the relatively short bar the traveller travels over, there's a much diminshed range of traveller adjustments possible on a C-25 compared to other boats. Is there something that can be done at the rear end?

There are multiple issues. One is class legality, it restricts the movement to what you have. Second is access, the top of the transom area can only be accessed through "access ports" cut in the transom wall. I have a friend who has a custom harken traveler all the way across the transom, much better range. However it means he cannot raise his tiller. I have invested time and money in improving what we have and am resigned to it.
