Hi,

I recently bought a used 250 wk and I am fixing some of the stuff that her 2 previous owners did. There seem to have been instruments on the side of the companion way which are no longer there - but the holes are - right through the the cabin. Also there is solid black patch where i believe someone had placed a glue on mount for a handheld gps. I have also removed some rather ugly speaker brackets that were screwed in either side of the companion way - right at the top - and don't seem to have been waterproofed in any way.

A few questions...

1. Is it likely that any of these will have damaged the wooden "core" ? - the front of the cockpit next the companionway seems to be two solid pieces of fibreglass with a gap between them but I may not be able to see it all - especially where the speaker bracket were.

2. How should I best repair the holes ?- especially tricky are the ones lower down that seem to have an air gap between the inner and the outer holes so squirting expoxy in probably won't work too well. Even if it did - wouldn't it look bad next to the rest of the gelcoat ?

3. Any ideas on how to get rid of a black patch where the glue on mount used to be ? I guess I could sand it down but it would require a re-gellcoat of a big area which might end up looking worse.

Thanks for any tips.

It sounds like you will become friendly with a little glass repair. Don't be daunted, the process is easy to learn. I'd suggest getting one of the books or manuals that describes the process, start with the projects that seem the easiest and take them on.

Soon, a feeling of pride will replace the holes and blemishes.

In my opinion, boat work requires an extra amount of forethought. For example, do you want to fill those instrument holes (not that hard to do) or are there other options.

The black spot may take some experiment. First, mask off and leave only the affected area visible. Try to identify what the black is and a way to deal with it. It could be silicone, 5200 sealant/caulk, or some other adhesive. Acetone might work but be careful as sometimes a solvent will simply make a mess and leach the coloration to a wider area or only partially dissolve the substance making it a mess. With the area masked, it might be that scraping the area with a razor knife to get off as much of the materiel as possible will be the best approach, then wet sanding with 600 grit, finish with 1200 grit wet paper well wetted from a clean bucket of water and rubbed out with some wax after removing the masking tape.

Considering "other options"....Maybe you can imagine what the PO had mounted in those holes and why. Maybe you can find an instrument that fits or requires a little larger opening. If larger, you can cut out some material to get back to solid core, rather than digging and filling. I like the lighted compass that mounts through the wall. I also like the porthole through-mount. Mine has a clear cover that removes by screwing from the outside and has a little vent and inside screen. Think it was Arlyn that mentioned Goof-off for removing adhesives.

Thanks for the input and suggestions - I will certainly go out and get a book (I am a newbie with glass work) and explore the black mass a little more closely.

Any input as to which part of the boat have the wooden core and which don't ? I see it in places (like the cockpit deck where the binacle is drill through ) but not in others - like some of the hole next to the companion way.

Thanks again.
