Hoping for advice on coating a 2"x2" metal plate to protect my transom from a to be removed spring on my outboard bracket so I can set motor in lowest position.
Thanks for any thoughts.

If there is any way you can get the plate made from 316 stainless you would be much further ahead. Almost any coating will scratch if it is used as a bumper or a physical protection from a spring. Onboard ships and oil rigs we use an inorganic zinc coating generically called dimetcoat. You might ask at a boat yard if they might have something like that. Dimetcoat is good because to some extent it will self-heal from scratches, in that the zinc molecules will migrate back into the scratch.

Is this only temporary? Heck, use a thin piece of hi-moly plastic, chunk of plywood (or etc) and some ducttape.

Permanent? Stainless steel. If it is plain steel, it will rust.
