I know that is not it's primary function, but does it also provide the function of a preventer? I'm thinking probably not, but thought I'd ask the more experienced sailors here.

Thanks.

There is no preventer action available from a boom vang (rigid or otherwise).
The vang pivots and swings with the boom. (if properly mounted anyway)

The only thing the rigid vang does that the rope vang does not do is support the boom when the sail is not up.

All correct...some people sell the rigid vang as a replacement for the topping lift...BUT, I have found that it does not allow you to torque down the boom enough to keep it still in a seaway.....mine will knock me overboard if not tamed..I can't muscle it. Soo, I installed a topping lift. Also an indispensible aid in no cursing reefing, but that's another story.

I also installed two preventer/boomtamers....led aft to cleats. Now I can get the thing to stop swinging back and forth (even a foot is too much) so I can approach it in a seaway without feeling the need for a helmet......

no....
you can use a normal vang for a preventer though...works great.
like the guys said a rigid vang like a Garhauer takes the place of your topping lift.
