The black rubber sleeve is affixed with two clamps. removing the old sleeve I notice some old sealant which had been applied inside of the rubber sleeve, underneath the clamps. What sealant is best for this purpose when replacing the whole assembly?
When I bought the replacement parts from Catalina Direct, I asked them to include the type of sealant they recommend for the job ... they sent me a 3-oz tube of "3M Marine Adhesive Sealant, Fast Cure 4200."
I don't know what else might work ... I'm sure you'll get some more responses. BTW, when you are done with your keel replacement, why don't you come do mine? <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
I just replaced that tube this past Saturday (it was a bugger to get off because of the wire in the tube!), but there was no adhesive on it whatsoever. I replaced it without any adhesive/sealant, just the 2 clamps. I ordered it from Catalina Direct and didn't get any adhesive/sealant. Does it need it?
When we did that job, we were still using 5200 on everything. I think that may be one of the applications where it was well worth it. That is something you don't want to come up.
On the other hand, the cockpit speakers were done with 5200 and there was a lot of swearing when we were replacing them this year.
I think polyurethane caulk would do the trick, but it is slow curing. I recently replaced the clamps on mine but hose was still ok. Clamps were of the quality where strap was SS but screw was not and was rusted to oblivion.
