Somewhere between decommisioning last year and commissioning this year I lost my nearly new carpet. I had replaced it a couple of years ago and had to send Catalina the old one for a template. Of course i decided keeping the old one around wasn't necessary and tossed it. SO, I called up and ordered a new carpet for my 1982 traditional interior, Hull #3220. catalina Yachts told me I needed a template. Great! i don't have one!
I was told to make one. Uh huh! So I purchased a plastic tarp and proceeded to try and make a template. Not easy let me assure you. I got reasonably close and called Catalina back to inquire as to whether they would use my template or just use it to verify my floorplan. "Good question" the guy said. Then the carpet came and of course it is way off. Needless to say I am not happy and then the Admiral decided to complain too. Any suggestions on how to make an accurate template?
What can't they do one up from blueprints or something? They just made boats with no plans? Sounds crazy to me.
I used a roll of brown wrapping paper to make a template when I did it. With the paper you can form a crease at the edges then mark and cut. The plastic tarp may have stretched and or moved. (Or did they make it wrong?). I just went to Home Depot and got some cheap indoor outdoor (light color so the dirt don’t show) and cut it myself.
Thanks Buzz!!!! It looks like it is pretty close. Took a minute to realize that it was made upside down???? Galley dip is on the starboard side? I'll double check it asap.
Catalina wanted the old cushions too when I replaced them a couple of years ago - so who knows, maybe our old boats were hand built by crusty old shipwrights reading from a sketch written on papyrus paper that Butler guy gave them. Then when they designed the next one they just threw the old design away?
The template is upside down so that you can place it on the back of the carpet and cut it. I have used douglas' measurements. Any carpet store should have remnants of the right size. This is probably quite a bit cheaper than Catalina. Some years ago my wife and I bought a kit from Home Depot called a Fit and Trim kit. I was a kit used to make a template for a linoleum floor. It came with instructions and some special little tools and a big load of paper. Everything we needed to make the template. It worked for that real well. Might have a look for one of them. Of course you might have to go back in a time machine to find one, not that I 'm getting old, but, time flies.
Lowes has nice boat carpet for about $3.00 a linear foot (12 ft wide). It is easy to cut with scissors or a utility knife. Overcut your first installation and then trim to fit. You can get 2 sided carpet tape strips for the edges or glue it in. Lowes has the glue. I plan to do the above, but have not as yet. I will try to avoid gluing. How do you apply carpet you get from Caatalina? Today I power washed the boat. It was nasty. Now I can see why the guy GAVE it to me. Before cleaning I couldn't see all the dings and worn places, but who can complain? I have a boat to sail in about a month
To make an accurate template, 1. Cut small 1/2" triangles in paper and cover with masking tape to attach to floor.
2. Cut template about a half inch too small all round.
3. Place a foot long ruler with outer edge against liner and trace on inside of ruler.
4. Trace around complete perimeter. Pattern done.
To cut carpet, place pattern on carpet attached with masking taped triangles. Proper size of floor will be exactly one ruler width greater than tracing.
What's with the carpet in C-25's? My boat came with carpet, probably installed by the PO. I've kept it because I like the color, but it was the first sailboat I've ever seen with carpet. Was carpet standard equipment? Why?
Mine came with carper and odor. (The P.O. had carpet so his doggie friends could sail with him. I question how much the dogs appreciated the art of sailing.) I couldn't wait to get rid of the carpet because I don't care for the smell of dogs. And I think the boat looks so much nicer with the white floor.
