My new Nissan NSF9.8A22 4stroke motor from Porta-Bote International was delivered to my driveway as promised yesterday. Only 6 days shipping from Mountain View, CA. We checked out the contents as the Watkins driver courteously (inquisitively) waited. There was a slice in the carton, but it only went into the styrofoam liner. My son Sean helped set it up on a stand so we could check the lower unit fluid, OK, and we checked the crankcase. It had been drained, per instructions, so we picked up a couple bottles of 10W40 and premium unleaded gas on the way to the marina. It came with a 3gal tank and (bulb)hose, tool kit and spare startrope and 1 spare spark plug. (2cyls, one xtra plug. Go figure.)

At the RCR Buffalo Skyway marina we heeded some advice I read here and reversed "Perfect Day" in the slip, attached a dock line to the motor lift handle (in case Davy Jones reached up and grabbed it) and safely lowered the motor onto the mount. It weighs 81#, close to our old 9.9 2-stroke Mercury. The shaft is 20" but my mount seems to be low on the transom, no problem there. I may replace the mount because the weight, as before, requires a double block rig to the stern pulpit to raise and lower it.

A nice guy, Chet, from a neighboring slip offered advice as we added oil and cranked her up. We were careful not to spill any oil! Instructions say to crank her 10 times with the stop switch closed to pump the new oil. A light shows when the oil pressure is okay (so, why doesn't it have an alternator?)

It cranked right up, and I must say we were pretty cranked, too! We let it idle for, like forever, and then decided to take her out and look like we were practicing docking in the slip. Thankfully, the wind was still. Low idle, figured out the shifting, etc. After 3 rotations apiece with the neighbors watching, we couldn't restrain ourselves and took her out to the outer breakwall and back under <1/3 throttle. Nice, quiet, clean engine!

Today, my wife and sister and my best friend's widow came for an afternoon sail. The Nissan propelled us easily at <1/3 throttle. Just enough to add a breeze to the 94 degree record temp. The wind was light outside the breakwall, so we cast out a float and dove in. >35 ft, crystal clear water, lake surface temp 75, cooler below 6ft. Spontaneous swimming is a tradition with us. Thanks to a PO for the swim ladder! We motored back to the Erie Basin, increasing and decreasing throttle, to check out sailboats getting prepared for the BHSC Wednesday night races, and then back to our slip at RCR. It looks like we have completed the first stages of the break-in, no problems, no oil loss.

I guess we motored enough to satisfy ourselves that the motor will be dependable for our FIRST INTERNATIONAL SAIL this Saturday to the Buffalo Canoe Club on Abino Bay, Ontario.

If you are still with me, I apologize for the length of this log. (We'll save the photos.) It's just that I am so pleased with the dependability of the folks at Porta-Bote and the results of my motor search. Also, for the interest (and muscle) of my son, the voluntered guidance from Chet, and the advice from you on this forum.

I'm glad you're excited about your new motor. My wife and I got our new Nissan about a month ago and we are still really happy with it. Changing out the motors with the boat stern-in made it so much easier for us too.

You might want to double check your break-in procedures. If i understand it correctly, and based on the knowledgeable support group we have with us I'm pretty sure I do, the break-in procedure is 10 hours long. To date I have 6 hours 10 minutes left. I hate motoring around. I feel like such a clown when all the other sailors are sailing.

Anyway, congrats on the new engine. I love ours!

You are correct, Ben. I meant to say "first stages" of the break-in. We have run about 3 hours. Now we can open it up to about 3/4 throttle for the next 6-7 hours. That may take a while. It's supposed to be a sailboat!

Supposed to be a sailboat is right! Oh well, the sacrifices we make for a (knock on wood) reliable motor.

I wonder what it is about these outboard companies!?!? I'm reminded of my own experience with Honda per your comments about recieving only one sparkplug with your new OB.

Couple weeks ago I phoned my local outboard store and told them I wanted a tune-up kit for my Honda 9.9 4 stroke. They said they have them in stock and all they really consist of is sparkplugs, oil and a gas line filter. So, I drove over there to pick it up. While at the counter waiting for the invoice to print, I opened the package - inside there was ONE sparkplug. I questioned them about it and they told me that when you order a tune-up kit you get one sparkplug. ONE of everything you need. Anyhow, they fetched me another sparkplug, and feeling a little embarrassed, they gapped them for me and gave me the second plug at half price.
