After posting Saturday night concerning 2005 Nationals, I had planned on getting back on line sooner than today to announce the site for the 2006 Nationals.
The officers sought bids and received a bid from Edgewater Yacht Club, Cleveland, Ohio to host 2006 Catalina 25-250 National Championships during Cleveland Race week. Association Chief Measurer, Duane Wolff, will be chairing the Catalinawind and an excellant championship series.
Duane will be posting details in the near future, but hope all the east coast c25-250 sailors who said they would like to sail in Nationals, will join us in Cleveland for 2006.
(I'd give y'awl dates, but I'm away from home and don't have the date at hand.)

Posted - 07/15/2005 : 10:28:43 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Can I get ther via canals? If you can get to lake Champlain or the Hudson River, yes. Maybe we should plan a convoy?
As Don mentioned the 2006 Catalina 25-250 Nationals will be held during Cleveland Race Week during the Cruising Weekend (A.K.A. PHRF weekend). I don’t have the exact dates in front of me, but believe it to be June 25-28. The location will be Edgewater Yacht Club right in downtown Cleveland.
Since this regatta will be held within Cleveland Race Week we will have our own start with 6 or more boats – a number I am confident we will attain. Because of the design of the regatta, there is a distinct possibility that our fleet will ALSO be competing for an overall, course overall and or JAM overall championships. This is over and above our nationals.
We will also be sailing with a PHRF/JAM offset rating for any boats without a spinnaker. This offset will be a new thing for the Cleveland area as we will be the first known group to utilize this type of handicap. We will have more information on this as it becomes available.
There are tons of details to follow, including a notice of race, schedules, costs etc., parties, food, directions, SI’s and more. I will also be working with SPIKE to post the actual Bid that I submitted which contains tons of these details.
I Invite ALL of you to attend. Even if you don’t race, there is lots of sailing that can be done and new friends to make.
At this time, I ask that you not email me, but leave your questions here on this post. I’ll do my best to check this daily to get back to you. By doing it this way, the question you ask can be answered for both you and the 9 other individuals who were too shy to ask it themselves.
Cleveland Sailing Association Cleveland Race Week is actually part of a larger traveling regatta, put on by the Cleveland Sailing Association...
Hey Guys, if possible please post the dates of the race. I have been there in the past and if you want hotel reservations you will have to make them very early!!!!!! You can definitively put me and my boat on the "I will be there list". After the superior winds of Kansas last week I just hope they will be ready for some pssible good seas if we get those kind of winds in Cleveland , Im allready stoked and looking for a crew for next year, if anyone is interested, it is never to early to sign up.
Rick, have you seen the thread on the NY canal system. It sounds like an intersting add on to travel the canals to Buffalo and then sail to Cleveland. Can you get to Lake Champlain? I think that if you can do that you could go by water to Cleveland. We would love to have you and other Capri's with us next summer.

The norm in most areas is to race PHRF and JAM separately. We are going to be using a rating that gives extra time to the JAM boats to make them competitive against the PHRF boats.

Looking at my calendar, it looks like the races will be Sunday - Thursday? is this correct? If so this may be an issue with the out of town sailors! I hope you are posting the dates 23-25 June to make it convient for us out of towners.
Let me double check that Bill... I might have looked at the wrong years Calendar.
It will definitely be a long weekend -- Thursday through Sunday. It hinges on another race which has a flexible date so its either the 22nd or 29th of June through the following Sunday. Let me double check that and get back to you.
First, the race will be held on a Thursday through a Sunday I not sure what Calendar I was originally looking at but it was definitely the wrong year. I must have scrolled ahead too far in Microsoft Outlook.
Now for the Race Dates: (This is the long version of TBD)
There is a race that traditionally was run at night (now it’s a day race), out to Canada around Pelee Island and back. In the old days I think it was around 100+ miles. Because it was a night race they ran it every year on the weekend closest to the summer solstice, thereby giving the sailors the most daylight possible. The organizers have since shortened the race and the crossing of the border due multitudes of reasons. They have though, kept the flexible date on the schedule and it remains as one of the weekends on either side of the solstice.
Because so many of the PHRF boats would race in that event, Cleveland Race Week One design would occur on that weekend and the PHRF Weekend would be immediately following so it would not conflict with the long race. Generally this is the 3rd week in June
PHRF weekend starts on the Thursday following One Design Weekend which coincides with the Robert’s Race which is the weekend closest to the summer solstice. This years Solstice is the 21st of June, 2006 which is a Wednesday. Pushing the Robert’s Race (the long one) back to the third week in June or sliding it forward to the
However, the commodores of both yacht clubs involved are setting the date over the course of the next few days. The strong push is to hold the regatta on the 22nd through the 25th. However that may change in the next few days.
As soon as I know, you’ll know.
dw
So the shorter version is the weekend starting Thursday the 22 or Thursday the 29th....

Bill -
There are a ton of hotels within a 5 minute drive and another 40 within a 10 to 15 minute drive. As it gets a bit closer if anyone is looking for lodging, please feel free to contact me. I'll get you a hotel list.
Anybody coming down the Canal , let me know and I can help arrange Slips in the Erie Basin Marina. Maybe we can all sail to Cleveland together from There.
Also Duane would it be possible to rent a slip the weekend before and leave the boat for the week and drive in?
Also if you need help let me know it is only a 3 1/2 hr trip so if you need set up help etc let me know.
Since the weekend before is our regatta is Cleveland Race Week - one design, slips will be limited until the Tuesday or Wednesday prior to our races. That is not to say one will not be available for renting. As we get closer in the spring we can investigate this. There are also a number of other yacht clubs and marinas in the immediate area that allow transient dockage So there are definitely options.
At this point, I don't see a lot of set up time required. A large chunk of the logistical stuff and set-up will already be covered by a bunch of our members and the club staff. I appreciate the offer and might hold you to it down the road. Right now I think we will be okay.
I wanted to get this out to all to answer any questions you might have: It contains excerpts of the bid I submitted to the association. I removed much of the tentative or unknown /TBD portions.

Fleet: With 6 boats the C25/250 fleet will be given its own start. Upwards of 20 boats might justify our own course, however this is not guaranteed and at the discretion of the club race officers. Racing would consist of C25 Tall, C25 Standard and C250 (configurations)
Scoring and Rating:
CRW Scoring: Since this is an “event within an event” there would actually be two regattas taking place. The primary regatta will be Cleveland Race Week. Boats in our fleet will be scored as either PHRF or JAM boats as declared on the application. Scoring will be done using Lake Erie PHRF Ratings. For Cleveland Race Week scoring, there will not be a non-spinnaker offset rating. (PHRF and JAM will be scored separately for Cleveland Race Week)
Other Scenarios: The possibility of other scenarios for starts, and fleets assignments may occur at the discretion of the PRO. Depending on turnout and other factors, any number of alternatives could occur. The Association will not have control of these logistics. However, the integrity of the same course sailed will be kept for these the 3 configurations. Reasonable accommodations can always be negotiated.
Committee: Edgewater Yacht Club will provide a US Sailing certified race committee for CRW and the National Event.
Scoring: Scoring for both Cleveland Race Week and the National Event will be handled by the race committee as indicated in the Sailing Instructions, Notice of Race and RRS 2005-2008.
Amendments to Association Rules: It would be recommended that the association utilizes Rule L-1 in their class rules and rescind the 1985 Rules committee ruling for this regatta to enable boats to compete better in an overall capacity. Motor must be on board, but does not need to be attached. (As indicated in the C25-250 class association bylaws and rules, this was instituted in 1985 by a race committee and not the general membership)
• Asymmetrical Spinnakers are allowed under PHRF LE provided the total sail area does not exceed the allowed symmetrical sail area. • Boats racing without spinnakers would do so without adjustment for Cleveland Race Week. PHRF-LE does not have a non spin rating. The adjustment would only apply to nationals scoring. • Cleveland PHRF Rules can be viewed at www.phrf-le.org
Class Rules, Sailing Instructions and Notice of Race
• Previous year CRW Notice of Race and Sailing instructions are included with this bid for review. The PRO in conjunction with the Chief measurer of the Association will draft theses documents for the 2006 Nationals if the bid is awarded to Edgewater Yacht Club. • A copy of the Class rules must be delivered to the PRO for Cleveland Race Week well in advance of the Notice of Race being posted.
Registration:
• Registration will be handled by Edgewater Yacht Club
I am still trying to lock the date in and wanted to let you all know I haven't forgotten.
Some good news - I've gotten verbal agreements from 3 major companies thus far to provide some sort of sponsorship. The depth of what they are going to provide is still undetermined, but we do have commitments. I'll provide their names once we have some actual $$ or merchandise committment.
I'd like to get an idea of what to expect with regard to the attendance. If you plan on attending can you respond to this thread, note if your bringing your boat too.
Duane - Judy and I hope to be there, but life is uncertain! We definitely will NOT be trailering "This Side Up". If we could beg, borrow (or steal!) a TR I could get the crew to come and defend our championship... Or, if we could sail a C250 I might be the first of us to win all 3 catagories... Derek
Derek - I'm working on finding boats that might be rentable, but I can't gurantee anything. I have seen a few c25 standards that are for sale. Those owners might consider renting.
Duane, Congratulations on this coming to Cleveland! Eileen and I would love to bring "Leprechaun", But we have never raced in a race like this before and are a litle concerned about # of boats ,course /starts ETC.... We will put this on our calender though. Others coming should also be informed that if they wish to stay longer there are alot of other areas to sail to on Lake Erie. Vermillion is a Very Nice cruising destination as are other towns and the Erie islands are within reach depending on the time you have.. I was glad to see that there would be a pre-race meeting, that will help get rid of alot of unknown questions! This should be very exciting! By the way we are about a 5 hour drive (with boat and trailer!). Alan & Eileen
