This is a great forum! I have a block mounted to the starboard side of the boom, aft, and a 'curly q' hoop at the mast. There is a block on deck next to the mast, and a clutch at the cockpit for the line. Suggestions on how to tie the reefing line and route it?
There are a couple of pictures in the online owners manual which should help you. One I have marked as 4.1.9 and the others are #19 and #16 in the parts list. #19 gives the parts numbers and description. You can modify that to run the lines back to the cockpit.
Ooops sorry... As I was saying... When I bought my boat 2 years ago (an '86 FK/SR), my reefing setup was the standard factory 2 line reefing system (1 line at the leech and 1 at the luff). I rigged up single line reefing by using some of the existing factory parts on the boom and added 2 blocks and fairlead to run it back to the cockpit. I looked at the single line reefing kit in the Harken catalog to approximate the location of the block and fairlead on the mast and used a turning block at the mast base to run it to the port deck organizer and back to the cockpit. I don't use a "curly q" hoop as it is one long piece of line run from the end of the boom back to the cockpit.
I used this configuration last year but still had to go up to the mast when reefing to remove the sail slot stops and feed the sail past the mast slot opening. This year I installed mast gates to cover this opening and can now reef entirely from the cockpit by tightening the topping lift, loosening the main halyard, pulling in on the reefing line and then re-tightening the main halyard. No need to go forward to the mast at all. Nice and safe... especially when single handing.
For my single line second reefing -I used two cheek blocks on the boom, two small blocks with rings at the reef points, two padeyes on the boom, a block at the mast base, ran the line thru a deck organizer and thru a rope clutch. I also use a mast gate so that the slugs drop all the way down. With this arrangement I can reef and unreef on the fly. The small blocks at the reef points greatly reduce the friction I couldn't overcome by just passing the line thru the reef points. Hope the picture helps. Mast gates can be ordered from Joe Martinek (joemartinek@starband.net). They are about $16 each, which already includes shipping. Just send him an e-mail.
Frank, Nice picture, clear description and easy to understand. Thank you. After I install my mast gates, I'll put on a cheek block on the boom and be ready for simplified reefing.

Hi Frank,
'Nice reefing setup!
I was wondering ... how do you attach the small blocks to the reef points on the sail?
When you reef with this set up, do you tie the manisail to the boom? Mine is loose footed and presents alot of floppy sail material if I don't flake it and tie it when I reef.
