What a shame. I bought my new ST winches, tillerpilot, and some ground tackle from Sailnet last year at substantially lower prices than WM. I was also addicted to John Kretschmer's monthly column, the last of which, "Love of landfalls", was posted in October of last year. Hmmmm - here's something interesting; people are reporting that Sailnet is kaput, yet their Web server is still up (probably for not very much longer).
Contacted a friend in Charleston, SC who's waiting on an anchor from Sailnet that never showed up. He called Lewmar and they confirmed that as of yesterday Sailnet has declared bankruptcy. That's too bad, I found them a good resource and always enjoyed the articles on the website.
I must confess that I lurk on the C30 and C34 message boards, its 5 and 9 foot itis. One of the side effects of Sailnet turning off their server, is that the C30 message board (and many others) is gone . The C34 site has also been down for the same length of time. I suspect that the officers of both those organizations are scrambling to find another server and I am greatful that our officers have placed our board elsewhere .
I think a lot of people are going to sailjazz, run by the boyles - they have started lists there already. they again have articles by all your favorite seagoing writers
One of the big concerns with the Sailnet collapse was that the 'history' on the forums they hosted would be lost... years and years of valuable experience/knowledge.
I ordered a 7-17 whisker pole from sailnet May 4 because the price was great and the shipping was free. June 1 I emailed them to ask whether I should just forget the pole, or if they had any intention of shipping it. No reply. Then my credit card bill came with the pole charged, but still no arrival. I called the credit card company and challenged the charges, which were erased. A week later the pole arrived (six weeks after the order). I contacted sailnet, which said they would charge my card. That's not yet happened. So, at the moment, I have a free whisker pole. It's no wonder they're out of business.

No doubt, Dave -- it's only one symptom of a much bigger problem. I'm finding that I'm increasingly willing to pay more to get decent service, whether it's at a marine supply store, the corner hardware store, Chick-Fil-A (which seems to hire employees with IQs at least 50 points higher and with infinitely better manners) vs. any other "fast" food places (which are no longer fast for the aforementioned reasons), computers (Mac), grocery stores (here in Virginia there's an amazing chain called Ukrops that's unlike anything I've ever seen), banks, and everything else. In my old age, I'd rather have quality than quantity, and service is an essential component of that quality. There are catalog dealers like L.L. Bean and Land's End who still seem to understand that, but sailnet forgot it to their peril.
'Just got this email from Sailnet ... they sound serious ...

This last email popped up everywhere all of a sudden. Don't like the tone or tack they are taking. Any concerns I had about doing business with them are now gone. I'll go elsewhere.
I got two of those emails, one on the Capri list and one on the Downeast list. Struck me as an odd letter and I wondered if someone had hacked the now possibly unattended servers.
