State of the Association--What We Have Accomplished

As the election year for the organization winds down and nominations are being accepted for the Flag Line for the next year, the officers wanted to informally announce what we have accomplished and where we are headed. As the most senior member, I can honestly say we’ve done more this year, than any of the previous years I’ve served. We have in place, a group of individuals who are committed to making this organization the best National Association, not just for any size Catalina yacht, but for all yachts in general.

Beside the usual maintenance of a website, the delivery of the tell tale, the day to day administration and other member benefits that we maintain, the association has accomplished and plans to accomplish the following by the end of our Term. Some of it is small, some of it is large, but we’ve each done our part.

What we have done:
Fleet Development Manual – Is now posted online and is available to assist any member or non member alike in the process of developing a new fleet.

2005 Nationals – Appears to be one of the best on record. Frank put in a lot of time and I’d have to say it was a huge success.

Absorbed the Mainsheet increase – as a group we all voted to absorb the cost of the mainsheet. While other organizations passed this cost on directly to our members, we have decided that the association has a strong enough position to pick up the extra expense.

Monthly Meetings officers and Staff meetings - In doing so, we’ve been able to stay ahead of the game, build a better management team and help this association to grow. Each month we get together via phone call and talk about the issues, assign action items and deadlines and actually do something.

Renewed contact with many fleets and created 3 new ones enabling our association to grow.

Accepted Nationals Bids – We picked Cleveland this year and can only hope that the 2006 national event lives up to the standard put established by Frank Hopper this year.

Virtual Memorial Day sail and photo competition - Jim Baumgart took the ball and ran with this, getting a fair return on his request for pictures. It’s something we hope to continue every year.

Tech Manuals – now available free of charge to the members via online download. We felt that this is information that every owner should have without paying a price. If they aren’t posted on our members section of the site by the time you read this, they will be shortly. These are the electronic copies of what we’ve been selling in the ships store for years.

Things Contingent upon your vote in the fall

Constitutional Amendments – Addition of the Capri Sailboats and their owners. Making a home for another 25 foot Catalina built yacht and increasing our membership and fleet base.

Changes in the way we contact you – providing electronic notification via email and the web to reduce costs. We also send the Tell Tale newsletter to over 95% of the association via email, to further reduce costs.

Implementing a standardized method and guidelines for accepting Nationals Bids

Rules Changes - have drafted rules changes to bring our organization current with the times and implementing a long needed handicap rating, especially for locations that don’t have a PHRF organization.

In Process and soon to be complete

Affiliate Programs – We are working to establish two types of affiliate programs to benefit you and the association. Advertising has always been a touchy topic, and we have no intention of muddying the forum with it. Instead, we plan on adapting our links page to include links to some of the retailers we all do business with to keep our boats afloat. Most of the links are already there, but the difference now will be that these companies will either give you a discount or provide the association with a referral fee. It may only be a couple of percent, but the boat units will hopefully add up. Any referral fees will be used to keep the dues fixed by subsidizing the web costs and the mainsheet costs.

2006 Nationals – Is already beginning to take shape. I’ve begun a lot of ground work and hope that everyone will be able to attend. Excerpts of the bid I submitted will be online and the 2006 Nationals post is on this forum. Please take some time to look at it, and even more time to attend. We all would love to see each and every one of you there.

Outsourcing of Ships Store – We are currently investigating alternative ways to do business in this arena. There are a number of companies that will do this for us, faster, more efficiently, and cheaper plus provide a better product and larger selection for a better price.

Indexing of the Archived Forum – Where did that old post go from 3 or four years ago? What about the stuff on the old forum? We are trying to get both to you in a more indexed and more readily searchable format. While the details are still in the works, we are trying to track down the old forum database and are looking to provide some sort of indexed thread listing for the archived section of the new one. Hopefully there will be more details on this to come.

Respectfully posted

Well done! Keep up the good work! I would especially like to see the forum archives preserved. At the very least, don't let all that valuable info slip away to the big bit bucket in the sky. Back it up in more than one location as soon as possible. Then maybe work on how to best make it accessable to members. Maybe sell an annual CD-ROM? With built in search capablility? That can be transfered to hard drive? With a convenient way to integrate the annual CDs as updates to a common data pool with a single search method?
