Recently, I installed a new Garelick outboard bracket and missed the fine print about the need for a 1" + mounting pad when attaching to an older sailboat transom. My question is, what would be a good material from which to make the pad/spacer? It'll need to be approximately 10" wide x 12" tall x 1.5" thick. Early thoughts are: 1) Marine ply encapsulated in fiberglass and painted
2) Starboard ($$$ )
3) Heavy Aluminum channel
4) ????

Your collective sage advice will be most appreciated!

I didn't use a single solid piece, but put a 4" wide strip under each side
of the mounting bracket... extended out a couple inches on each end for
extra support. Using strips rather than a single piece makes it
a LOT less expensive! Probably lets you go to your Starboard idea.

Whatever you use, make sure to radius the corners to
reduce stress concentration.

BTW... I used teak for mine... finished with 6 coats of Cetol.
(I like the look of Teak).
