Anyone know what size fuse/breaker should go inline (+ve) to the Tohatsu 9.8?
It is for both the starter and the supply. But the Starting current is the one that will determine the fuse size.

Yep, I looked over the manual and the tohatsu website, nadda!

Thought that while I'm upgrading the electrics (2nd battery, marine charger, off/1/both/2 switch) I would also put a fuse/breaker inline to the engine.

Or is it a bad idea???

Casey's book shows a fuse inline with the starter, but the Tohatsu only has one set of wires, acting as both the starting and supply lines.

A circuit breaker in line with the positive cranking battery lead would seem to be a very good idea. I'd locate the breaker where it's out of the weather, but reasonably accessable to someone operating the engine. (Inside a cockpit locker or coaming pocket for instance.) As for cranking current, I urge you to get a copy of the factory shop manual for your engine. (<i>And that goes for the rest of you too!</i> ) The starter motor current or power draw is sure to be in there.

As for the traditional [0FF/1/BOTH/2] battery selector switch, you might want to read the [url="http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/westadvisor/10001/-1/10001/creatingabatterysystem.htm"] West Marine Advisor[/url] on high current battery hookups that supercede that configuration. While you're at it, I recommend reading up on [url="http://www.yandina.com/combInfo.htm"]Battery Combiners[/url].

I have had a 9.8 Nissan for about a year, I have two batteries with no in line fuse or battery switch. I chose to keep it simple, I also have a solar panel connected. No problems so far.
