I know that the isssues of Swingers have been discussed up and down on this forum a lot over the years, but I don't remember a discussion of this question. Is there a recommended life expectancy for the Keel winch?

For me, that comes out to replacing the winch about every two to four years. I replace the swing keel cable and bolts every two years no matter how good they look. Of course it depends on how fast your parts deteriorate in your environment.

Leon,
Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you replace much more frequently than I have. I'm still on the origional winch. It is sturdy and rust free. However ..."sticth in time saves Nine" and all that. It is the only component I didn't replace in the keel system.

I'm reasonably confident that WOTAM still has the original winch... after 28 years.

I removed, dismantled, inspected, cleaned, painted and re-lubed the winch a couple years ago.

The only part on the winch that is 'fragile' looking at all is a pawl and spring that keeps what I'll call the "the secondary shaft" from rotating backwards... (this is what causes the brake to engage).

Will probably repeat the overhaul when I put a new keel cable in this fall (replacing that every 2 years).

>"This is what broke on mine.." [the pawl]

I'll be sure to take an extra close look at it on the next overhaul.. As I mentioned in the previous post, it was the one part of the winch I thought they shoulda made beefier.
