I opened my AMEX bill today and saw the deck of a nice sailboat with lotsa lines led aft. Then I looked closer and realized that either the male model or the photographer don't know beans about sailboats. And the marketing people don't think much of sailors (or don't care). At least I got a laugh. Maybe he needs to pull harder on that rope to start the motor.
Sailor humor "Come on down, your going to like working the foredeck"
Model reality "I just love my kite, pretty kite; (I'm too sexy for my shirt), huh, what, is it time to break for lunch? The sprout and avocado sandwich is mine...
I saw somewhere that the "sailboat" is the in advertising venue for the next year. This ad reminds of an ad a while back for a major retirement planning group that was pushing "a relaxed and secured feeling" that you had when your investments were with them... All stated, of course, while a sailboat was cruising by in the sunset across the screen. The only problem was the mainsail was undertrimmed and the jib looked like hell. The only feeling it gave me was if you invest my cash like you sail that boat, I'll be broke long before that boat makes it back to the dock.
As for this ad: If you put the right lure on the end of the jib sheet, when you catch the marlin, the furler will open up, thereby allowing the boat to drag the fish. Once the fish is tired, you furl the sail in and throw the jib sheet on the winch...Presto - Dinner for six.
Ever get asked how you sail upwind? Try telling the person asking that you point the boat downwind and sail backwards. I often get blank stares as people try to think if that IS how you do it? It often gets a laugh.
I may use this pic as proof.
Another version of the Pushme-Pullyou Dr. Doolittle?
With what I know from the advertising business, the owner of the boat is just outside camera view saying to himself..."I don't care what they do, I'm going to smile....all the way up to when they leave and write me that check for five large..."
