OK...I plead naive; after 5 years with a C22 and about 2 months with our C25 we dropped anchor for the first time ever. Previously we simply drifted or tied off to shore for meals, swim breaks, etc. So with full (book) knowledge of tackle, scope, etc. we drop anchor (25'chain +rode over standard bow roller), but... Just how in blazes is one to deploy or recover the anchor through the bow pulpit effeciently? We were well protected from oncoming winds and so managed, but in any other situation, I just cannot imagine how this can be done gracefully and without banging the gelcoat all to pieces, unless the anchor and chain are led outside the pulpit and then back to the locker???
BTW,we anchored in a beautiful forested cove surrounded on 3 sides by rock bluffs; fantastic! And, we had it all to ourselves except for the 18-20 boats who came in after us .
I pull up my anchor until the chain hits the roller. Then I manually pick it up with the chain out of the bow roller. I use a 16.5 lb Delta Plow anchor. It's tricky as my roller furler drum sits really low. Ah, to have a C36 with a windlass. Someday.
