A recent post on engines talked about concern with walking on the bow and keeping the engine in the water. I never experienced that problem - 25" shaft on a custom long travel bracket - but I did rig my anchor in a way that would have made this moot.

I single hand a lot in areas with high current and typically 20 knot winds. I wanted to be able to set my anchor from the cockpit without having to go forward to rig it, and to be able to retrieve it also without going forward for safety perposes. I don't have the money or desire for a windlass and don't have an anchor roller. I got most of what I wanted. Whole thing cost me $15 - I did already have the anchor and rode.

I suspened a heavy carabeener from the bow pulpit from an appropriately size strap. I attached another to the mid-ships stantion at deck level. My anchor now lives in a canvas tote in the cockpit. Anchor and chain are in the tote, then the rode goes over the coaming and lies along the toe rail outside the stations. At the bow it goes through the carabeener then aft to the mid-ship carabeener, then back over the coaming into the bag. The tail of the rode, 200' is in the bag under the anchor.

To deploy all you need to do is toss the anchor under the lifeline. Rode runs out forward through the carabeeners cum fairleads. I tie off momentarily to the winch when I have the scope I want. Then I go forward with the boat nicely, if temporarily, parked and take the rode out of the carabeener and place it in the chock, tie the rode of to the big old cleat in the middle of my deck, go back aft and back down on it. Then open beer.

To get out, I tie the rode off to the winch, go forward and untie the cleat, put the line back in the carabeener and go back aft. Again, all with the boat nicely parked. Then I can use the winch as a manual windlass to pull the rode in, break the anchor free, and pull the whole mess up until the chain reaches the carabeener. Tie off again momentarily with the anchor suspended in the water. I've done this in up to three foot chop at speeds to four knots and with 15' feet of chain and a 16.5# claw anchor the chain doesn't hit the boat. So I sail into deeper water and pick a moment when everything is calm and go forward and walk the anchor and chain aft around everything and put it back in the bag.

I didn't quite get what I wanted - I still have to go forward but only once when the boat isn't actually anchored and I get to pick my moment for that.

YMMV

Justin,

Thanks for the tip! It seems to me another of those, "of course it's simple" things that are simple only when someone describes them.

Thanks again,

Sounds like a great set up. I have done similar but not such a unique set up. I have secured the bitter end on the bow. Ran the line aft outside the stantions to the cockpit. When droping anchor just slip it over the side from the cockpit. Let out the length you need and snub it off on a aft side or stern cleat. Set the hook kill the motor and walk the line forward. I keep my anchor line flaked into a 5 gallon bucket. Main anchor when stowed is on the bow pulpit, lunch hook in the port locker and storm anchor stowed bellow decks. Extra anchor line stowed with storm anchor. Extra shakles always available.
