Guy that works at the boat yard came buy to talk about me launching my boat on Friday and he tells me about one he just bought. (not sure of the timeline though with the work he has done). It is a Catalina 30, from Montreal. About a '79. It has the Atomic 4 engine. I shied away from the beamier boats when I was looking, but after touring this boat, I love it! The interior layout is so nice and roomy, with more of an actual kitchen (no ice box though), and a map desk.
One thing I found strange that Catalina did though. They gave you headroom for 6' almost out to the windows edge so the deck topsides is still only as wide as on the '25. I told the guy I would have liked to see made another 6" of deck for better walking topsides.
All-in-all, though very nice boat. He got for $3000. So far he has rebuilt and painted the engine, buffed/polished the hull, varnished the hatchboards and is now working on the rudder and the mast. He hopes to be in the water on Saturday.
You are right on the money the C-30 is an very nice boat. On three occasions, Ive charted one out of Mallets Bay. The boat was called Options and was very nice and well maintained. It had a diesel powerplant.
The head room difference makes all thge difference in the world for us 6'+.
I'd say the guy got a steal at 3000. Even with an Atomic 4.
I would shy away from an Atomic 4, since the company went out of business at least a decade ago (parts will eventually be hard to come by), but the Cat 30 with a diesel is a sweet boat, and the engine placement right in the middle of the salon floor under the galley cabinet makes it really easy to work on. And in the winter months, when prices are down, you can often find 15~18 year old ones for under $22K, nicely equipped and in turnkey condition. IMHO The Cat 30 is the perfect move-up boat for a Catalina 25/250 sailor that's ready to give up trailerability, wants an inboard engine, and a cabin that's roomier than a Cat 25, but wants to keep costs of ownership under $400/month.
There is an outfit called Moyer Marine that has everything up to and including complete renewal for Atomic Fours, with scrupulous attention to the gasoline supply they make a swell engine IMHO, Ron #2343 srsk Orion SW FL
$3000!!! Yes, he stole it! Everyone in the yard says it. It really polished up beautifully. But, the PO had not set foot on it in over 4 years. The last time it was in the water was 2001, and that time, the po had them launch it, hoist the mast, then move to a slip where it sat until it was hauled in the fall.
