Just this week went to cycle my keel, handle was spinning, winch drum-NOT. I was able to get the setscrews out of the male spud on the shaft, with difficulty, and remove the spud. Had a hell of a time working the setscrews completely out, but with sufficient lubes, elbowgrease, and sailorly language, got'em. Took little cylinder to machine shop and asked them to "chase" or "freshen" the threaded areras each side: they did so twenty bucks. Went back to boat, spin spud on, try to turn in the setscrews, same result. They seem to bottom out, aligned with the milled flast each side of the shaft, but the winch spins the spud again, not the shaft and drum. I know the winch will work, because by aligning the locknut on the shaft, spud off, I can turn the drum by turning both nuts together on the winch shaft. Now I can get one setscrew out, the other will turn back and forth through a limited range, but jams up on either end of the turn. Is this GALLING? If so, what can I do? Have never run into this before...Thanks for any help, Ron in Venice, FL

Is this GALLING?"

Sounds to me like a damaged thread.

Most of the time when I've had stainless threads gall, they seize up completely. Literally weld themselves together. Did you replace the set screws with new and lube the threads with never-seize (or similar) before installing?

Clam, thanks for suggestion. Answer: No, I didn't. The setscrews are a rather odd size and looked OK to the untrained (my) eye. I will go on ffom here seeking more expert advice and trying more stuf. Thanks, Ron srsk Orion SW FL
