Is it normal to have a considerable amount of play where the boom gooseneck attaches to the slide clip? On my 84, before attaching the sails the boom can rotate about 1/4" each way
I think what you are seeing is normal. The whole goose neck area has several parts and they are not close tollerance. You might pull either the bolts or pins and look for excessive wear. It will be obvious if the pins or hardware have groves worn in them. If so replace them.
My 84 does the same thing; probably even looser. I've never worried about it much, as it tightens up fine with the sail trimmed. But then I read on another post that we aren't supposed to use the boom as a gin pole when stepping the mast (which is just what I had done) and started worrying a little about the stress.
Has anyone else had a problem with the gooseneck failing?
