What can any of you fine members tell me about the Catalina smile ?? Evidently it's a syndrome that occurs between the Hull and the leading edge of the keel. Question Cosmetic or Structural ??
Mine was cosmetic. A weekend job with a sanding disc to gouge her out proper, some West Epoxy (peanut butter consistency), avec 407 (light) filler, sand paper, and some bottom paint. All done.. Good as new..
The smile can be a bad sign or it can be cosmetic. It just depends on each boats condition. Has it run aground ? What condition are the keel bolts in. The area in the bilge where the bolts come through has a section of plywood glassed in. Is the bottom of the bilge firm and dry Here is a picture of the fin to keel joint after being faired. Hope it helps. If you have a small smile clean it out and fair it in again. But if its very large you might want to find out why.<img src="http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b2dc09b3127cce9c9a3ea36d960000005610" border=0>
