Getting close to raising the mast time. Last times I had such difficult time connecting the front stay as the weight of the furler seems to make getting it tight enough to connect almost impossible... am I missing something? How do others do it?

I mentioned this in another post yesterday.

First, if you have a split backstay, make sure to release one side. This will give some slack, but maybe not enough.

You can loosen your turnbuckle for the backstay. This creates more slack, but is not absolutely necessary if you have a split backstay. Plus, with split backstay, it is very uncomfortable having both arms raised in the air while standing on a step stool. And you have to remove/replace the cotter pins - a real pain up so high. So I try to avoid it.

The one new thing we tried yesterday was for my wife to use an 18' long boat pole to lift the furler and reduce the sag. That made big difference. You would have to buy a telescoping aluminum pole, and find a screw-on boat hook (or similar attachment) to go on the end of it.

I have the Schaeffer furler and for me there are 3 variables:

1. Backstay turnbuckle loosened.
2. Furler locking strap unscrewed (giving access to forestay turnbuckle) and forestay turnbuckle loosened. *
3. Make sure the trailer winch strap (mast raising system) is not winched too tight which could have the effect of pulling the middle of the mast forward and causing the top of the mast to be pulled back.

I still may have to put a little ooomph into pulling the forestay/foil tight to attach the forestay but if it doesn't attach fairly easy...something is not right. I had taken it loose (without loosening the sidestays) so it should go back together.

* I use a bungee across the bow pulpit to hold the furler up the foil and out of my way until I've retightened the forestay turnbuckle and am ready to install the locking strap back onto the furler.

I replied to Rick's previous post also. I installed a spinnaker block to the mast to fly a drifter. This also serves as additional leverage when trying to attached the forstay to the chainplate. I back off the backstay and have someone pull the mast forward. makes it much easier.
I have a split backstay and remove just one side
