Do any of you have a bronze washer installed on top of one of your gudgeons? I have the new-design gudgeons from Catalina Direct with the nylon bushings. My old gudgeons had a bronze washer installed, and I am wondering if that washer is necessary with the nylon bushing present.

Though we have different boats, gudgeons are gudgeons. I also have the new style but never had a bronze washer. I do use 1/2" nylon washers on top to raise my rudder as much as I can so the tiller sits right. Since these rudders want to float and have upward pressure when in the water I don't think that there is much wear on the top of the gudgeon. I do put a nylon washer on the bottom side between my cotter ring and the bottom of the gudgeon. This is to protect the cotter ring from getting cut by the bottom of the gudgeon with all the twisting and upward pressure. I noticed the ring was almost cut through after the first year of ownership.

When I purchased my boat the bushings were missing. (I may have lost them during the 250 mile road trip home) Anyway, I was not familiar with Catalina Direct yet and machined some out of oil impregnated bronze. They are still installed.

I wanted to make sure there's no slack between the top of the pintles and the bottom where the cotter pin sits, otherwise the rudder would go Ka-thunk every time the boat pitched on a wave. So I bought a bunch of washers to take up the slack (about 7 or 8 washers). The bottom one is a split washer to adjust the slack to nil.
I'd like to insert a plastic collar over the pintles inside the gudgeons to remove the lateral slop as well.

You should purchase the new ones from Catalina Direct. They have black nylon bushings that accomplish that.
