I was able to study the mechanics of my outboard and my mounting bracket last night and realized the problem. When the bracket is in the full up position, you can still pull it up about a half inch. GRanted, it does not stay up that half inch, it just travels up then goes back down when you release it.
when you tilt the motor, to get it tilted all the way up, you have to pull the motor towards you and tilt upwards from the back at the same time. This cause the entire assembly (outboard and bracket) to travel up that half inch, which in-turn, causes the motor to hit the transom. My dockside solution is to tilt the motor up as far as possible, then get off the boat and from the dock, lift the end of the shaft until the motor locks into the fully tilted position.
this works for dockside, but I can not do it while at sea.
I notice the wood bracket on the mount is very tired, so that needs to be replaced, also thinking that maybe a new bracket is on order. Of course, the motor is original and could die tomorrow and a replacement may not give me all this grief.
Talked to the PO. He never was able to get the motor all the way up either. So, it is only really possible when at the dock. Under sail, I will tie it up.
