The winner of our 05 Nationals has been invited to the USSA Championship of Champions. U.S. CHAMPIONSHIP OF CHAMPIONS (Jack Brown Trophy); Bayview Yacht Club, Detroit, Mich.; Flying Scot; September 28-October 1. Gary Shepard of Ninnescah Yacht Club will represent the Catalina 25-250 National Association If his application is picked. There are only about 25 positions and around 40 qualified champions so they have a lottery of the applications. Lets all wish Gary luck on getting picked and even more luck with the Flying Scot that the races will be held in. If chosen his crew will be very qualified and we stand a good chance of winning it all.
Frank, from the posts you made on our Nationals it's obvious that you all had a great time and it's great to see our boats possibly being put in the spotlight. Enhances the value of the boats and of the Association.
Oh! is that a new pic in your signature? Very nice
Who is was Semper Fi's PO. If it's who I'm thinking, he was a member of our yacht club a number of years ago here in Northern Michigan. I can't think of his name though. The boats red accent striping look very familiar. Has it a deep keel?
I don't want to "out" Gary too much, but he is typical of a silent group of lurkers that are association members and frequent readers of this forum; they just don't post. (This is of course unfathomable to me, the post-aholic)I wish there were a way to entreat people like Gary to share their knowledge too. As Derek said, Gary is more than our association's national champion, he is one heck of a guy. Another of the lurkers has just sold his boat, (it placed 5th over all at the nationals) and moved on to a Catalina 28. I hope the new owner will become a poster. (Do you suppose these people are afraid of guilt by association due to them being fleet 95 members?)
As for Semper Fi's PO... no the boat has always been here at Cheney, I am just lucky enough to be her 2nd owner. I put the red VC-17 on her and like it better than I could have hoped. I can hardly wait to do the hull with VertGlass.
Frank, I don't remember our national champion ever having a chance to participate in the Championship of Champions before. Is it a new event, or did you or someone else do something to get Gary an invitation?
I hope you'll let us know the outcome.
I don't know whether he was given a national association burgee at our regatta, but it would be nice if he would fly one while the boat is at the dock.
Our club was given a burgee which is hanging in the clubhouse. I agree that we should provide him with one for the event. (Who's minding the burgee store these days? JB?) We were invited because Duane added our event to the USAA calendar, that put us on the radar. I was contacted (as regatta Chair) by USAA and asked to invite our winner. I am sure Duane will do it again this year for the 06 nationals. (Kinda nice when we get'er done, eh?)
Good luck, Gary! You made a very favorable impression on those of us from Portland at the Nationals, not only for terrific sailing, but with your humility, advice, and friendliness.
Another Cheney sailor I got to like a lot was Neil, whom we called "Mr. Shell" because of the logo on his boat that had a French name (I think) that I could not pronounce! I assume that he is the guy you refer to who has perhaps bought a C28? I am glad he found a boat, but I will miss him, too, as a C25 sailor. What a great guy!
The 2004 Nationals were listed on major regatta calendars, too, but no invite to the Championship of Champions. Could it be that we (in Portland, OR) were simply too far away???
Gary B. s/v Encore! #685 SK/SR Fleet 94 Captain
Oh, and Frank, thanks a ton for the CD of pictures. You never told me what I owe you!
