I recently discovered I have a problem with the jack on my Trail Rite trailer that my 1985 SW C25 on. In all reality, yesterday it just plain broke. I got a new pin in there, but since I got the boat/trailer (End of January) I have been skeptical of the jack. It just seems like it turns too hard. It's now clunking. I found out it's an Atwood jack, and they don't make parts for it anymore. Has anyone had problems with it, and what have you replaced it with? I can get a jack that mounts on the side bracket, but it's nice having the jack in the middle. Would I have to worry about the stability of the boat if it's on the side bracket? I have replaced the tires, all electrical work and now this is really the only thing left that hasn't been replaced.

A friend of mine had his replaced for ~$100, they ground off the old unit and welded a new one on. I personally feel that a bolt-on unit is too light-weight for the Trail-Rite - but, it would work for most situations. You might look at the "dually" model - not that you'll be able to move the trailer w/boat by hand though.

Dave & Sharon,

My EZ Loader trailer came with a side bracketed mount, and it has worked just fine. However, recently my trailer and jack were damaged in an automobile accident, and when the jack was replaced, the new one wouldn't raise the trailer tongue high enough to let the hitch pass under it. I found out that different jacks allow different amounts of rise. If you get one, be sure you get one that will raise your trailer tongue a sufficient amount.

Thanks to both Steves for the input. They make some pretty heavy duty jacks that I think should handle the load, but I never thought to make sure they have enough rise. The one I looked at is bolted through the frame, not just bolted onto it. I don't know what a "dually" model is, unless you're referring to one that has a wheel on it. I have looked at those, but am puzzled as to why one would use a wheel as I also don't think it would be easy to move with the boat on it. Although, maybe a wheel could be handy for when the boat is not on it. Mine is still working, but I would hate to have it poop out on me when I'm not in West Marine's parking lot.

The wheel on the jack doesn't allow you to move the trailer very much, especially when the boat is on it, but the wheel makes it possible for you to move the trailer tongue a couple inches or more, so that you can center it over the ball. Otherwise, you have to move the whole tow vehicle until the ball is perfectly centered under the trailer tongue.

One last note - the Trail-Rite is a heavier trailer than the EZ-Loader.
