I'm finding that my Eldridge Tide table doesn't really have enough specific information regarding the currents in my local sailing area (NY Harbor and the Hudson River). Are there any other tide & current charts that will offer better, more specific information?
In general, here's my problem: The current of the lower Hudson changes about 2-3 hours after the tide. The little current chart only gives a basic, simplistic idea of what the river will be doing with regards to the tide at given intervals after high or low water at the Battery, but rarely is their "average" even close to reality. I've found that it isn't really accurate enough for navigation since, even with fair winds, if you're fighting the current of the river, you're sailing backwards.
Someone recently pointed me towards Reed's Nautical Almanac, but I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.
You have a great boat, mine 82 sr/fk no pop dodger instead and you sail in some fabulous waters. When I was sailing past the Brooklyn Bridge last fall, I hooked up with this 32" striper.
Here's a short list of the Tide Stations in the Lower Hudson and Upper Bay also with the high tides for Labor Day.
NY, Union Stock Yards 10:36 AM NY, Chelsea Docks 10:26 NY, Debrosses Street 10:19 NY, Govenors Island 9:58 Brooklyn, Gowans Bay 9:47
I don't know what or where your tide info is from, but you can call one of the local marinas and they could tell you the tide difference for their area.
79th Street Boat Basin 212- 496- 2105 Surfside 3 Marina 212- 336- 7873 North Cove Yacht Harbor 212- 938- 9000
I hope this info was helpful and in the right area. I got this info from my Garmin Mapsource digital charts, do paper charts have tide and marina info? Feel free to email me if you need some more help or different area info...

Same holds true for much of the Chesapeake. My Navionics Gold charting software has T's and C's all over the place that I can click on and get tide hight and current velocity. The lag is immediately evident. I do not know where it get's the information.....Reeds Almanac also gives a general overview. I can only suspect it "calculates" it, and must say that although direction and timing of reversal are mostly correct, the velocities seem somewhat less on target.
There used to be a publication that showed current charts for local areas to NY at each hour of the tides, and I am sure the East River/Hell Gate/Brooklyn tidal flows were among them, the info went all the way East to Plum Gut, dont remember the name of the pub now but I would bet it's still around, give West or Defender a cal, they will know if it's still in Print, Good Luck, Ron Orion SRSK #2343 SW FL
