A beautiful day of sailing yesterday out on Tampa Bay...NE winds 16-18 kts (and increasing), seas 4-6 feet. Closing in on the Sunshine Skyway bridge and ready to tac...brought her around and
OOHH NNOO!...the rudder snapped off Got her into the wind, got the sails down and kicked in my old reliable, 20 year old, 8 hp Evinrude Yachtwin. We made it back to the marina while the winds had probably increased to 25-30 kts. What a day...

Which leads to my questions, I've seen recent discussion about the Idasailor rudder. Has anyone used one of these and would you be willing to give a recommendation, it would be very appreciated.

I JUST got the new IdaSailor on Encore! about 2 days ago. I have not yet been under sail, but I putted around a bit under power. The helm feels quite light to me with this new, longer, not-so-deep (fore and aft) rudder. i MAY be in a race this weekend which will hopefully tell me more about performance.

More posted when I know more....

Gary, Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Did you also replace your gudgeons? I have not made the purchase yet and even if I did have a rudder would be unable to sail this weekend due to other plans. Idasailor indicated that once ordered, it would only take a few days for me to receive the new rudder.

Good luck with your race this weekend.

I was AMAZED how quickly I got mine in Washington State. I ordered on Monday, on Thursday they told me it was about 80% complete, and by Saturday I had a big package on my porch. I ordered it with the 3/8" pintles which was my error. They then sent me the 1/2" ones which match the new gudgeons I had installed a couple of years ago. I have replaced the smaller ones with the larger ones (thankfully the holes are the same). I put the 3/8" in the mail today, back to them.

So far, customer service has been outstanding. Again, I am only one state away from the Ida in IdaSailor, so your time might vary a bit.

Hi Gary, might you have some feedback regarding your new rudder? Also, did the company install the pintals or did you do the measuring and drilling? Thanks.

The company drilled and installed the pintles....but they confirmed with me the size. It seemed to work just great this weekend, but I did not notice a "speed" difference. it was a 20 mile spinnaker run in quite light air, so I really had little chance to "test" it. I was single handing, so of course I did not "win" the race, but It seemed towork great. I used the auto pilot on the motor run back up the river and all was good.

I just have not had the time or conditions to really put it to the big test. The helm feels "light", if that helps........

Sorry I dunno more to help you. I THINK I am going to like it, but only time and experience will confirm for sure.....

Gary, thanks for your input. I just called Joel and placed my order. I should have it by the middle of next week.

Did you mention my name??? I will call and collect my "referral fee". Just kidding.....I am curious to know of your reactions and experience as well. I suspect we will see a number of these, eventually, especially if the members of the Association vote to make them "class legal" for One Design racing, as I hope they will......

Keep in touch on this subject, k?...

Once I indicated "Catalina 25", Joel mentioned your name. I'm very excited about the new rudder and will also have new gudgeons . I will give a report after using a few times.

Should be a fun few months...once the hurricane season ends, and before the northerlies (sp) start, a few of us at our marina are planning on a trip to the Keys Possibly Marathon...I'll keep you updated.

Yee Haw!! Got home from work today and the new rudder was sitting on the front porch! Pintles already attached and a new tiller! No anti-foul painting this weekend...I'm going sailing! Almost 2 weeks since I've been out on the water. I know people at work noticed an attitude change...am I imagining things or have others experienced this change when you haven't been able to sail for awhile?

I will be curious about how yours performs. Please keep me/us posted on what you think about the IdaSailor rudder. Our racing season is basically over, so I really won't know much until next spring about "performance", speed wise, but we are doing a "Sail for the Cure" event tomorrow to benefit breast cancer research. First time in weeks I have been out, so I know how you feel. Off now to clean the boat and scrub the bottom.

Keep in touch,

Like going from a 1976 VW van to a new Porsche...the new rudder is beautiful . With only 10-12 kts wind and 1 foot chop it wasn't the best opportunity to completely test her out but I can already tell that the boat is much more responsive with a much lighter helm. While heading out the channel several of the big gas guzzling yachts provided some nice wake...this is power steering or what you may call two finger tillering. Don't believe I noticed any speed difference but actually thought I was able to point higher. Could have been my imagination being that I haven't been on the water for 2 weeks. Can't wait for some "good" weather to give her a real test.
