I use an asymmetrical cruising spinnaker with an ATN "tacker" for the light winds of summer on Whiskeytown lake. It is great but taking it down can be an ordeal. I usually come broadside to the wind to leave the spinnaker in the shadow of the main sail. A crew member is stationed on the companionway steps to gather in the spinnaker after I blow the sail tack from the tacker and I lower the spinnaker halyard. The crew member gathers in the sail and stuffs it in the galley while I run back to release the spinnaker guy and take the wheel. While I find this procedure easier and safer than trying to stuff the spinnaker in the bag on the deck, it can become a Chinese fire drill if the wind comes up or changes direction. I am considering purchasing a stasher and would appreciate any recommendations and or comments.
Thanks, Robert

I have a chute scoop.

West Marine # 230110

It has worked perfectly over the past 2 seasons and the price was right.

Robert,
The only way to go with an asymmetrical is to use a chute scoop, spinnaker sleeve, dousing sock, stasher or whatever you call it. Always hoist and lower the spinnaker sleeve while broad reaching to achieve blanketing of the spinnaker behind the mainsail. It is far easier to douse the spinnaker by blowing its tack than its clew. Overtrim the spinnaker (bring it in all the way until the spinnaker sheet is tight under the mainsail boom). This has the effect of bring the spinnaker behind the mainsail. Walk forward up the bow, pull the pin of the snapshackle at the tack. The spinnaker flies off and the sail is sucked behind the mainsail, completely blanketed. Then lower the spinnaker sleeve by pulling down the control line, then the halyard, and everything goes down the forehatch. The main trick is to blanket the sail, which is possible only on a broad reach or lower since dead down wind is tricky and a beam reach does not offer any lee behind the mainsail.

I checked by douser today, it is also a "Chute Scoop" I picked it up at the Chicago boat show, it works great, and unlike a douser that I had on a different boat, doesn't get tangled up, well worth the investment.

Thank you for your recommendations on the "Chute Scoop". I bought one and I have used it in good weather and when things got ugly. I was caught in a sudden and sustained wind of 20 plus and I was able to bring the sail down with little drama. I did mount a snatch block at the base of the mast for the scoop down haul and a cleet on the mast to tie it off. I have also used the technigues that you mentioned above with great success.
The scoop has been one of the best additions to our boat. It will surely bring some fun to the dog days of summer. I really use my asymmetrical spinaker now. In the past it was too much hassle because we don't have that many long downwind runs.
Thanks, Robert
