I have a Catalina 250 water ballast and am interested in installing an electronic fish finder. Has anyone else done this? I am concerned about locating the sensor properly to get accurate readings and am also concerned about not damaging the ballast tank.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. I wrapped my transducer in plastic wrap and made a 'mold' of it with silicone caulk on the floor just in front of the water tank. I then removed the transducer and plastic wrap and filled the depression with epoxy and stuck the transducer in it. Works fantastic. Oh, check the prices for the transducer extension cable when you buy the fish finder. They're pretty steep.
Wally, I used a toilet bowl wax ring (new, I might add)to secure my transducer to the inside of the hull. I balled up the wax and stuck it to the hull in the V berth area under the 12 gallon water tank. I then stuck the transducer down in the wax, careful to avoid any air pockets. The only draw back is the water temp dont work, it gives the hull temp instead of water temp. Its been there for over a year now and no problems. The best part of this idea is if you don't get accurate readings you can move it.
On my water ballast boat(hull #799) there is a square well located just forward of the water tank underneath the vee berth specifically designed for that purpose. That is where you want to locate your sensor. Some have drilled a hole for a thru hull sensor and some of us, including myself, have epoxied or waxed in a traditional stern mount type sensor. Mine has worked very well in that location.
