Hi all, I'm wondering if the following scenario is normal. Whenever I've had my holding tank pumped out, the attendant spends a lot of time working on it. However there always is a little left over. This last time the attendant mentioned that he often has problems with boats whose pump-out accesses are on the deck (like the C25) as apposed to accesses on the side. Evidently pump-out accesses on the sides of boats are easier to get all the bad stuff out.
Is this normal, or is there something I should be doing to help facilitate the successful use of the pump-out machine?
It may be impossible to get every last bit out of your holding tank if, like most tanks, the pumpout hose fitting on the tank is mounted on the side. As the tank is being pumped out, the level inside goes down and once the level reaches the top of the fitting, air will get into the output line breaking the suction. This may leave 3 or 4 inches of stuff left in the tank.
Sounds like I've finaly found an advantage to the 3 degree port list of my C25, It is intended to improve pump-out of holding tank. Maybe this is what Catalina intended all along...
thanks ya'll. The attendants always do flush it with water (several times, actually) before they finish. I supposed I'll just put a gallon or two of antifreeze through the head system before I put the boat away.
be careful what you put in the holding tank. we did some "serious cleaning" (a.k.a. clorox) and all the happy little bacteria (I think) died (oops, rookie mistake). The smell that comes out of the vent each time we flush is pretty unbearable. Now trying to re-enzyme, etc to get it going again. At least make sure you use something intended for holding tanks (or at least the pink "potable tank" stuff)
Ben, We have just pumped out for the winter haul out... We ALWAYS flush with water...pump out after filling with water, fill again with water and rock the boat alittle and pump out again.. We put alittle more water in and ALWAYS use the products peggy Hall recommends.. K.O. (Kills Odors) and C.P. ( Cleans Potties). They are a little more expensive BUT when comparing ours to a friends Catalina 30 he uses Generic Other Stuff (cheaper). We get No odor and lots of enzymes to eat the bad stuff! You can get KO/CP at West Marine or Catalinaowners.com We have found it to be worthwhile!
I avoided reading your post thinking it involved what it did involve. Yuk. Glad you have resolved the situation. I have a porta potti but don't use it since it refuses to care for itself. I have the same problem with pets.
The sign on Calista's stern rail states PIS TU CELA and so I sail alone.
