The gudgeons for my rudder came off (the gudgeon is the piece that attaches to the hull that holds the pintle, the connecting pin attached to the rudder). When I bought the boat, I noticed that there was a screw missing from each gudgeon and the rudder was loose. Turns out the bolts were there; the heads had sheared. I tried to tighten the remaining bolts but they were frozen. I tried drilling out the sheared bolts, but no affect. I managed to add 2 new bolts. Now the heads from the new bolts have sheared and the bottom gudgeon is gone and the rudder useless. I want to reattach both gudgeons. I figure I will need to install an inspection port in the cockpit transom to access the upper gudgeon bolts. The lower gudgeon bolts are accessible, but the factory glassed over the nuts and backing plate. I guess I will have to grind that out. The factory specifies 1/4 X 3" bolts, but since these have sheared, I will probably drill the holes larger and use 3/8" bolts. Anyone have any thoughts/ideas/experience before I start this major project?
Only thing I would add is partially tensioning the mounting screws until the polysulfide has a chance to cure and form a gasket. If you use a power buffer/polisher this would be a convenient time to hit the transom!
I did that project last winter. What I found under the glass, on the inside of the transom of my '82, was a piece of bronze/brass 1/4" x 1" x 4" with threaded holes for the bolts. No nuts at all. I ground the piece out (big mess) and glassed in a larger piece of marine ply and then thru-bolted the gudgeons on.
