This won't get fixed unless we SCREAM LOUD ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I alread posted this earlier, but the server timed out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FIX THIS!!!!!!!

The problem is most likely with the hosting server. I was only pointing out, in the absence of any real facts, that the problem might be any one of a number of things. However, you are correct that the trail of discovery starts with the web hosting company.
The bottom line is that we'll all just have to be patient as our volunteer webmasters attempt to discover and resolve the problem.
Whatever you did, performance is good this morning (07:22 west coast).
I have a T-1 at work and Cable internet at home. The forums have been (mostly) very slow (like mole in granite slow) on both of the connections. Seems like the site itself would open ok... speed issue was in the forums themselves.
What we are contemplating is deleting any threads over 1 year old. If you have some favorite past thread, open it and make a post (this is called a "bump" in web forum parlance).
We are also contemplating removing registered forum users who have not posted or logged in in over a year. We have thousands.
Your officers will discuss this Monday.
This will fix the "search" problem as well. The database is MS Access and its just too darn big.
Ah, Access, that explains a lot. That's a beast no one can tame. Seriously, you should consider looking into some other forum software then. This will only recur and more frequently as the forum is used more. What good is a database you have to keep trimming? The whole point of a database is to preserve the data... Rename the old tables and archive them, they may be able to be converted and reaccessed in another set up. Please don't eliminate them.

There are hosting companies that offer MS-SQL (not Access) which you could probably migrate your database too, but it might be more software change that you want. But they are very inexpensive. I am the webmaster for an aircraft group similar to this one, and we use vBulletin with MySQL. We have five years of messages online (with no "archive" distinction) and have very good performance.
But I feel your pain. Such a migration takes a lot of volunteer time...time that may not be available.
But I too would be sad to see the old messages be inaccessible. I used them a lot to try to make my boat decisions, even as I learned that I had to search the 250 specific archives because searching all of them would time out. The older data was very useful to me...
My first three tries tonight were worse. Got "no such server" (without a timeout), then two timeouts. I was trying the "Active topics" page. I switched to the C250 specific page, and it came up fast. Then the All Forums page, then this forum, all adequately fast. If you get this, then replying to a topic worked OK.
I posted something yesterday, but now it is gone, so I will repost.
Our hosting company is working with us to help speed up our site. The site has been moved to a new server. Go ahead and chime in about your response times. And if you posted something during the move, that post might have been lost.
Also, I have checked with the Snitz forum. Snitz users of Access report that they have no problems with a large database. Also upgrading to the newest version should have little or no affect on speed.
I will eventually get to the bottom of this problem or die trying.
Tuesday evening around 10 eastern I was able to get to the forum list, but not access the individual threads. It would simply give me apage not available. No timeout error.
Warning: Not complaining, but you asked for feedback. Well, I hate to say it, but for much of the day today, the forums were impossible to access for me. Just reading a forum or an individual post would fail to return anything at all. The active topic search timed out. Other searches timed out. Forget even trying archive searches.
About 5PM Pacific time, response time speeded up immensely, allowing me to make this post, and another.
My problems continue as well... sometimes I can get in and read one thread, and when attempting another...nothing. My problems are with the forum only, the remainder of the site has given me no problems.
