I kept looking at the motor in its packing box and thought the shaft length seemed long...longer than the Sailmaster's. Upon measuring the distance from the inside of the motor clamp to the antiventilation plate yielded a surprising 28 ". So what gives with the advertized 25"? Not complaining mind you, every extra inch meanss more bite and I'm pleased to have it... Thanks Nissan

I'm curious about your new motor. Is it 2005 or a 2006. In 2006 they claim to have moved the shifter to the front of the motor. For me it would be a great feature because I made the mistake of mounting the tiller autopilot on the same side as the motor. Now I have a real long stretch to shift the motor in and out of gear. Besides...I'm looking for more reasons to justify a motor upgrade. Currently running a 8 HP, two stroke, long shaft (20 inch), Nissan. Has anyone seen an appreciable difference in power, noise and fuel economy doing this? I can always sell the other motor which is a 1998 to help finance the upgrade.

Hi Bruce,

Yes it's a 2006 and the shifter is in front. I can't tell you much more than that since it's still laying in its half carton waiting to be installed. The old motor must be removed and taken to Johnson for repairand the new one installed. Fortunately I have a Garhauer motor crane to help with the muscle end of it.

I repeat only what I've been able to discern on this forum. Those that have them love them. I'll take their word on that.

Val: I think Nissan/Tohatu measures from the bottom of the "lip" that goes over the transom instead of from the top of the transom. My 20" long shaft actually measures 23". I don't know why they do it that way, but I'm not complaining either.

John,

The manual that Nissan provides shows the shaft length being measured from the upper inside of the transom clamp to what they identify as the anti-ventilation plate. That's what I measured. There is a small joint ridge a couple of inches above the anti- ventilation plate that would yield 25", but their diagram shows the measure being performed as above.

I assume the lip you are referring to is the inside upper limit of the transom clamp. Is that so?

Yes, I think you measured correctly. Here's a ridiculous attempt at a drawing. I don't know how this will look once posted...

John,

You're too modest, didn't I see your sketchs featured at the Guggenheim this summer?

I can under stand that measured as your drawing indicates the measurement would be about 25". B U T , I've never seen that position used to express shaft length measurements, and Nissan indicates otherwise in the manuals supplied with the '06 Nissans. Ya learn something new every day. I'd scan the manuals diagram but this new forum got too complicated fer this oldie to do so. Perhaps some other owner has the time and experience and will accommodate us.
